Why Portugal
Portugal is the quiet achiever of European wellness. It has no clinic tradition to speak of and has not tried to invent one. What it has instead is a set of properties built into landscapes worth the trip on their own, run at a price that undercuts France and Switzerland by a wide margin, with a climate that works for most of the year.
The Douro is the centre of it. A river valley of terraced vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape and the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, which is a slightly strange setting for a wellness stay until you spend a day in it and understand that the walking, the light and the quiet are the treatment.
The trade off is the same as Britain’s. This is naturopathic and restorative rather than medical. Nobody is running a diagnostic panel. What Portugal offers is a properly designed programme in a place that makes you want to be outside, and the value is genuinely unusual at this level.
