The property
Chinese medicine reaches most Western travellers as a line on a spa menu, an hour of acupuncture booked between a facial and a massage. Ruihe Chiva is built the other way round: the medicine is the architecture and everything else, the rooms, the kitchen, the service, is arranged to serve it.
The water came first. The thermal springs at Tangshan, 45 minutes outside Nanjing, have been used for 1,600 years and were reserved for emperors and the imperial court long before anyone thought of building a hotel on them. Nanjing was the capital under six dynasties and is a quieter, more literary city than Beijing or Shanghai. Far fewer travellers go there.

The property has 22 suites and each one has its own private thermal spring. At the centre is a healing pavilion of 1,500 square metres where the herbs, roots and teas used in treatment are also what the kitchen cooks with. There is no programme menu and nothing to choose from: every guest is assessed on arrival by pulse and tongue, and the days are built from that reading and rebuilt as the body responds, at two to four treatments a day.
The staff are trained to act on that reading rather than simply file it. If the diagnosis says a guest needs to stay quiet, tea arrives without a word, without eye contact and without anyone asking how the morning is going.
It is the wrong address for a client who wants biomarkers, a blood panel and a printed protocol to take home. Ruihe explain their reasoning at length and in person, and they do it in the language of Chinese medicine, which a client who trusts only numbers will find maddening. It is the right one for a client who has already done the Western longevity circuit and come home rested but unchanged.

How a stay at Ruihe actually works
It starts before arrival, with a health and lifestyle questionnaire and a call. On arrival there is a full consultation: pulse and tongue diagnosis, an assessment of constitution, and a working view of what is behind the symptoms rather than a list of the symptoms themselves. Nothing about the stay is fixed until that has happened.
From there the team works across eight areas, choosing between them daily: the consultation itself, therapies such as acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal medicine and thermal treatment, Chinese bodywork including Guasha, Tuina, cupping, foot reflexology and head massage, movement in the form of Tai Chi, Qigong and Yangsheng walking, food, hormonal work covering menopause and premenstrual symptoms, breath and mind through breathwork, aroma, incense and sound, and a beauty side working on skin, hair and scalp. Two to four treatments a day, and no two guests on the same schedule.

The part CS came back from the call talking about is the explaining. The doctors do not simply prescribe. They set out, in detail and for each guest, why this treatment and not that one, what the diagnosis actually reads and what it means about the way that person lives. That is not a courtesy. Chinese medicine asks the guest to change daily habits after they leave, and nobody changes a habit because they were told to.
The heads of department are the property, more than the building is. The head doctor, the kung fu master who runs the movement work, the chef and the head of guest experience are each the reason a specific part of the week works, and Jane Wu, who founded the group after nearly ten years running Bulgari in Switzerland, recruited them on that basis.
The week does not end at the airport. Guests leave with guidance on how to eat and live at home, and Ruihe will help find a TCM practitioner locally to continue with.

What you eat
Full board is inside the suite rate, all meals and the herbal drinks with them.
Food is treated as part of the treatment rather than as a wellness menu running alongside one. What a guest is given depends on constitution, the season, how their digestion is working and what they are recovering from, which is why there is no single Ruihe diet to describe. The herbs, roots, teas and seasonal ingredients kept in the healing pavilion are the same ones the kitchen cooks with.

What we cannot tell you yet: the restaurants, the menus, and how strictly the eating is controlled for a guest who is used to eating what they like. Nobody from our side has eaten there. Ask us and we will put the question to the property.

The setting, the springs and getting there
The property sits by the Tangshan hot springs, a thermal landscape of stone pools, bamboo and wooded hills that has drawn people out of Nanjing for well over a thousand years. The waters were already valued for their healing qualities during the Southern Dynasties, and Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling came here during the Republican period. The area has a much longer history still: in 1993 the skull remains of the so called Nanjing Man were found in Huludong Cave nearby.
There are 22 suites and no more, which is the point rather than a constraint. Each has direct access to its own natural thermal spring, available at any hour, and its own garden courtyard. The healing pavilion at the centre runs to 1,500 square metres. Outside it there are courtyards, framed views and a pagoda where the morning Tai Chi happens, laid out after the logic of a classical Chinese garden so that the place reveals itself slowly rather than at the entrance.

Nanjing itself was China’s capital under six dynasties and later the capital of the early Ming. It holds one of the largest surviving city walls in the world along with the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum and its Sacred Way, and it was made a UNESCO City of Literature in 2019. It is far less visited than Xi’an, Guilin or Chengdu.
Getting there: 45 minutes from Nanjing Lukou International (NKG), 30 minutes from the railway station, and about an hour from Shanghai by high-speed train. There are direct flights from Paris. Private transfers, VIP airport handling and a car and driver for the stay are all inside the rate. The property works in English and Mandarin and is open year round.

What is the atmosphere like, and who stays here?
We have not been, and the property has not opened, so we will not describe an atmosphere we have not sat in. What the founders describe is a place run at the pace of 22 suites, where the service is built around a diagnosis: if a guest has been told to stay quiet, the tea arrives without a word and nobody asks them how they are. Ruihe expect entrepreneurs, executives and professionals, alongside people recovering from a demanding stretch of work and active retirees. The setting is a thermal landscape of stone pools, bamboo and wooded hills outside a city that is cultivated, literary and much less visited than China’s better known destinations.
What makes Ruihe Chiva different?
The quality of the Chinese medicine, which is what the founders lead with and what is genuinely rare at this level: a property where TCM is the whole architecture rather than a treatment on a menu. Three things follow from it. The doctors explain their reasoning to each guest in detail, on the view that nobody changes how they live because they were instructed to. There is no protocol to pick, so the schedule is rewritten as the body responds. And the price has one line in it, the suite, because the medicine is not sold separately. Add 1,600 years of imperial thermal water underneath, one private spring per suite, and only 22 of them.
How much does Ruihe Chiva cost?
From USD 2,733 a night for a Harmony Suite, rising to USD 3,684 for the Imperial Suite, and that figure is the whole price: your programme, every treatment, all meals, the concierge, the car and driver, the airport handling and three local experiences are inside it. There is nothing else to add except flights. The minimum stay is seven nights, so a week starts at about USD 19,100 for one or two people sharing. Rates read from Ruihe’s own booking flow and confirmed with the property in August 2026, before opening. Ask us and we will confirm against your dates.
What are the alternatives to Ruihe Chiva?
In China itself, Clinique La Prairie Anji takes the opposite approach, applying a Swiss medical protocol in a Chinese setting, and the two make an interesting pair to put in front of the same client. Elsewhere in Asia, RAKxa in Bangkok is the closest for combining a traditional medical tradition with modern diagnostics, and Chi Longevity in Singapore for a science led longevity programme. For thermal bathing as the centre of a stay, the Japanese onsen properties are the natural comparison. None of them does Chinese medicine at this depth.
What is Ruihe Chiva?
A 22-suite health resort built on the Tangshan hot springs outside Nanjing, and the first property from Ruihe Longevity Group, founded by Jane Wu. It works entirely through Traditional Chinese Medicine: no packages, no fixed protocol, a diagnosis on arrival and a schedule written from it. It opens on 23 October 2026.
What is the difference between TCM and CCM, and which does Ruihe practise?
Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM, is the standardised system the People’s Republic codified from the 1950s: a national curriculum, hospital training, a shared diagnostic vocabulary and a defined materia medica. Classical Chinese Medicine, CCM, is the older body of practice it was drawn from, carried through lineages and family schools, closer to the classical texts and far more variable from one practitioner to the next. Ruihe practise TCM. That has a practical consequence worth knowing: the doctors are trained and credentialed inside a system another practitioner can recognise, the diagnosis is written in a vocabulary a TCM doctor at home can read, and Ruihe will help find someone locally to continue with. A classically trained practitioner may go further inside one lineage’s methods, and is harder to verify and harder to continue with afterwards.
Is this a clinic?
No, and Ruihe are clear that they do not want to be described as one. It is a health resort whose method is Chinese medicine. There is no Western diagnostic workup, no blood panel and no biomarker report. A client who wants those should go to a medical address, and several of ours do exactly that.
What is included in the price?
Everything except flights. The suite rate covers your programme and all treatments, all meals and herbal drinks, a private concierge, VIP airport handling, a car and driver for your stay, three local experiences, and the pre-arrival consultation. Only the suite is priced. The medicine is not an extra.
Is this the same as Chiva-Som in Thailand?
No. They are unrelated properties that happen to share part of a name. Chiva-Som is the long established health resort at Hua Hin in Thailand, which we also work with. Ruihe Chiva is new, and Chinese.
What are the Tangshan hot springs?
A thermal spring area 45 minutes outside Nanjing whose waters have been used for 1,600 years and were once reserved for emperors and the imperial court. Emperors, scholars and literary figures retreated here, as did Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling in the Republican period. Each of Ruihe’s 22 suites has direct access to its own spring. The area is also of real archaeological significance: the Nanjing Man remains were found nearby in 1993.
How long do I need to stay?
Seven nights is the minimum and Ruihe do not sell anything shorter. Ten nights or more is what they consider the length at which the work holds, and it is what we would recommend given the flight.
Can I bring children?
Guests need to be 16 or over. Younger guests are looked at case by case and only accompanied by a parent or guardian, depending on the stay.
