Before booking any retreat, take a moment to sit down with a pen and paper and ask yourself honestly:
What do I really need?
Is this an urgent need, or a longer-term desire? Are you looking to address a physical concern, recover from a difficult period emotionally, or simply optimise your wellbeing and vitality for the long run?
Knowing your “why” will shape everything. Everything from the destination and programme, to the budget and length of stay. Are you willing to travel far to get the results you’re looking for? Or would you prefer to stay closer to home?
The question of time
In a world that moves so fast, we naturally want results quickly. But when it comes to the body and the mind, time is non-negotiable. We need time to integrate, to release, to regenerate.
Take Ayurveda as an example: a complete Panchakarma programme lasts 21 days. Even for a shorter detox, weight loss, or regenerative medical stay, the rhythm tends to follow a familiar arc:
- Day 1: discovery. A first contact.
- Day 2: the body begins to understand something is happening.
- Day 3: often the hardest. The body either resists or releases completely.
- Day 4: a moment of confusion, an in-between space.
- Day 5: with the support of the therapists, the body is ready to come back up. You start to feel better. Especially after the feeling of day 3 and 4.
- Day 6: you start to look better.
- Day 7: you’re ready to return to daily life, renewed. And you look younger.
What happens if you leave on Day 4 or 5?
This is where retreats can go wrong. If you leave before the turning point, whether it’s because of work, family, or logistics, you return to daily life while your body is still in the middle of its process.
The stress of everyday life kicks back in at the worst possible moment. I’ve seen clients who left early end up bedridden for longer than if they had simply stayed the full seven nights.
If you only have a few days…
Then simply set yourself a realistic goal. A short stay is still deeply valuable. But it needs to match your timeframe.
Rather than compressing an intense detox into four nights, choose a programme designed to nourish and restore gently.
Or better yet, treat it as a diagnostic retreat: a pause to assess your health, receive expert guidance, and reconnect with yourself. When you’re ready for deep transformation, you’ll know to plan for seven nights or more.
The retreat that truly works is the one that’s honest about what it can offer. And very important, a retreat that matches where you are right now.
