Wellness destination

Cambodia

Where to go for wellness in Cambodia: private island retreats in the Koh Rong archipelago, Khmer healing traditions, how to combine the islands with Angkor, and when to travel.

Why Cambodia

Cambodia is the quiet one in South-East Asian wellness. Thailand has thirty years of clinic-grade retreats and Bali has the volume, while Cambodia has almost nothing, and that scarcity is the whole proposition. The country's wellness offering is essentially one exceptional private island resort and a handful of spa hotels around Siem Reap, which means privacy of a kind Thailand cannot sell at any price.

What is here is distinctively Khmer rather than imported. Traditional Cambodian healing, herbal compresses, reflexology and Buddhist practice sit at the centre of the treatments rather than decorating a European protocol, and the better properties work with in-house botanists and foraged plants rather than a treatment menu flown in from elsewhere.

The honest caveat is depth. There is no medical wellness in Cambodia, no diagnostics, no supervised fasting. This is a destination for restoration, for a nervous system that needs quiet, and for travellers who want the Angkor temples and a marine-protected archipelago in the same trip.

What a Cambodian wellness stay actually looks like

The format is the curated journey rather than the medical programme. You choose a theme, typically sleep, burnout, digital detox or spiritual practice, and the property builds four to seven days around it from consultations, spa treatments, movement sessions and time outdoors. Prices are quoted as a package including the villa, which is unusual and makes comparison easier than in most of Asia.

Khmer tradition does real work here. Expect herbal leaf compresses, reflexology, tree rituals and Buddhist blessings alongside yoga, pilates and breathwork. The food follows the same logic, plant-forward and locally sourced, with a marked emphasis on Cambodian produce rather than an international spa menu.

The setting does as much as the schedule. On the islands you are on the water constantly, foraging, swimming, paddling, or simply out of range, and the digital quiet is real rather than a policy on a card.

Where to go, and getting there

The wellness that matters is in the Koh Rong archipelago, in the Gulf of Thailand off the southern coast. Sihanoukville International Airport is the gateway, about twenty-five minutes by road to the mainland lounge and then forty-five minutes by speedboat to the islands. Phnom Penh is around three hours away by expressway, and Siem Reap connects by a forty-five minute domestic flight.

That transfer chain is the thing to plan around. Nobody should be building a two-night trip here: the islands reward a week, and most guests pair them with three or four nights at Angkor, which is the natural cultural half of a Cambodian trip.

The dry season, roughly November to April, is when to go. The south-west monsoon runs from May to October and brings heavy rain and rougher seas, which matters when the last leg of your journey is by speedboat.

Good to know before you book

Visas are straightforward. Most nationalities can obtain an e-visa online or a visa on arrival, and the process is quick, but check the current terms for your passport before booking anything non-refundable.

Prices are quoted in United States dollars, which circulate alongside the riel and are the working currency at every property we deal with. Expect the quoted rate to be before tax: ten per cent value added tax, ten per cent service charge and a two per cent accommodation tax are added on top, which is a material 22 per cent and catches people out.

Island logistics shape the trip. Boat transfers run to a fixed schedule, medical facilities are hours away, and the properties are genuinely remote. That remoteness is what you are paying for, but it is worth being clear-eyed about it if anyone in the party has a condition that needs quick access to care.
