The Beating Burnout wellness journey at Song Saa Private Island

A journey of rest and resilience for people who have run past the point of recovery. It pairs deep rest with a deliberate re-engagement: village visits with the Song Saa Foundation, Khmer reflexology, and personal training in the jungle gym, on the principle that recovery from burnout is not only about doing less.

The community strand is the distinctive part. Spending a morning on the Foundation's work in the neighbouring fishing village turns out to be more restorative for most people than another treatment, and it is built into the journey rather than offered as an excursion.

This programme is priced for each booking. The property confirms it for your dates.

Song Saa Private Island, in detail

Snorkelling over the marine protected reef at Song Saa Private Island, Cambodia

01

The property

Song Saa occupies two small islands in the Koh Rong archipelago, an hour or so off Cambodia's southern coast, joined to each other by a footbridge. Their Khmer name means "the sweethearts". Twenty-four villas, all hand-built from reclaimed timber, driftwood and thatch, sit across the pair, and there is nothing else on either island.

The property exists because of the reef rather than the other way round. Melita Koulmandas came to these islands in 2006, found a reef in steep decline under a covering of rubbish, and began working with the neighbouring fishing villages to restore it. Song Saa opened in 2013 to fund that work, went on to establish Cambodia's first marine protected area and the archipelago's first waste management scheme, and is a certified B Corp. The conservation is the point, not the marketing.

More on the property

The wellness offering is more serious than a resort spa. Seven structured journeys run four, five or seven nights around a named theme, built from consultations, treatments, movement, meditation and time outdoors, with a spa spread across an over-water sala, a treehouse, a salt room and a jungle gym. What it is not is medical: there are no physicians, no diagnostics and no clinical protocol. This is restoration, privacy and a nervous system left alone.

Saraan Sanctuaries, and a wellbeing built from the island

The wellbeing programme runs under the name Saraan Sanctuaries and sets out to combine three things: Khmer and wider Indigenous healing practice, Buddhist thought, and modern technique. The organising idea is metta, loving-kindness directed at the self, the group and the environment, which is also the thread that ties the spa to the conservation work rather than leaving them as separate departments.

Treatments are built from what grows here. An in-house botanist prepares foraged plant material for the therapies, and the Herbarium works as a plant library and teaching space rather than a decorative touch. Khmer herbal steam, leaf compresses, reflexology and tree rituals sit alongside shirodhara and Vichy showers on the same menu.

The seven journeys are the way most guests engage with it. Each takes a theme — sleep, harmony, couples, burnout, digital detox, fitness or spiritual practice — and builds an arc across four, five or seven nights from consultations, a substantial number of treatments, personal movement sessions, outdoor immersions and meditation therapies. A four-night journey carries two consultations and nine treatments; a seven-night carries four consultations and nineteen. One consultation happens before you arrive.

Around the journeys sit a wellbeing centre offering intravenous therapy, hydrotherapy, pilates, yoga and sound healing, a jungle gym built from stone, bamboo and wood, and a conventional indoor gym with weights and cardio equipment. Treatment settings include the Sushumna Sanctuary out over the water and a Treehouse Sanctuary up in the canopy.

Five settings, and produce that stays in Cambodia

Vista is the main room, a thatched pavilion out over the water serving contemporary Cambodian cooking from breakfast through to late. Driftwood is the beach bar, doing thin-crust pizza, Khmer-inflected salads, sushi and cocktails at sundown. The Raw Bar sits in the jungle on Koh Bong and works with raw ingredients for nutritional density. The Chef's Garden serves light seasonal Khmer plates next to the kitchen garden they were picked from, and there is all-day poolside dining above the ocean.

The sourcing is unusually good and unusually documented. In 2024 all fresh produce came from within Cambodia and 57 per cent of everything served, food and drink together, was sourced locally, including line-caught fish from Cambodian fishermen and milk from small dairies. The kitchen is candid about the compromise it makes on seafood, sometimes serving responsibly sourced frozen fish rather than fresh to protect local stocks, which is a rarer piece of honesty than it should be.

Menus are seasonal and change often, plant-forward options run throughout, and dietary requirements are handled as a matter of course. Guests on a wellness journey take all three meals as part of the package across the different settings rather than eating the same room three times a day.

The food doubles as something to do: a Khmer cooking class that starts with harvesting the garden, a pizza-making class, a Khmer afternoon tea ceremony, and floating breakfasts served into the villa pools.

Twenty-four villas across two islands

The resort spans Koh Ouen and Koh Bong, connected by a footbridge, with twenty-four villas across six categories. Every one was hand-built from reclaimed timber, driftwood, thatch and upcycled oil drums, to a design by the founder, and every one has a private infinity pool, an open-air shower, a sunken bathtub and a terrace. Sizes run from 135 square metres for a one-bedroom villa to 300 for the two-bedroom and Royal villas.

The wellness estate is spread rather than centralised: the Sushumna Sanctuary out over the water, a Treehouse Sanctuary in the canopy, the Herbarium, a salt room, a floating pool, a jungle gym built from stone and bamboo, a conventional gym with weights to 80 kilos, and the wellbeing centre for intravenous therapy, hydrotherapy, pilates, yoga and sound healing.

More on twenty-four villas across two islands

Beyond the spa the island runs on water and forest: snorkelling and diving on the reef the resort helped protect, paddleboarding, sunset cruises, foraging and orchid hunting with the resident botanist, and visits to the neighbouring fishing village through the Song Saa Foundation. Resident marine biologists work on the reef and guests can go out with them.

Every villa comes with a personal Villa Host who handles everything from unpacking to the day's plan, which is how a resort this remote stays effortless. It also holds Condé Nast Traveler's Triple Crown and works with Virtuoso and Regenerative Travel.

Questions we are asked

Atmosphere, prices, alternatives

What is the atmosphere like, and who else is staying?

Barefoot, quiet and very private. Twenty-four villas across two islands means you can go a day without seeing another guest, and the personal Villa Host system removes almost every interaction you would normally have with a hotel. The guest mix is couples, honeymooners and a growing number of solo travellers on the wellness journeys, with a strong sustainability-minded strand who came because of the marine conservation work. There is no dress code and no formality anywhere.

What can I get here that I cannot get elsewhere?

A genuinely private island in a country almost nobody associates with wellness, which is the whole proposition: this level of solitude is not purchasable in Thailand or Bali at any price. Beyond that, a wellbeing programme built on Khmer healing and foraged plant material prepared by a resident botanist rather than an imported spa menu, treatment settings out over the water and up in the canopy, and a conservation operation that established Cambodia's first marine protected area and that guests can actually take part in.

How much does it cost?

The wellness journeys are published as a package including a One Bed Jungle Villa, and run from roughly USD 4,400 for four nights to around USD 9,600 for seven, depending on which journey. Villa-only rates start at about USD 819 a night for the One Bed Jungle Villa and rise to over USD 4,300 for the Royal Villa. Add 22 per cent for VAT, service charge and accommodation tax, which is substantial and easy to overlook. Ask us for a current quote: villa rates move with season and demand.

What else should I look at?

If the island privacy is the draw, Amanpuri in Thailand and JOALI BEING in the Maldives are the closest comparisons, both more polished and both considerably more expensive. If you want the same part of the world with a genuine clinical programme behind it, Chiva-Som or RAKxa in Thailand are the right answer and Song Saa is not. If it is the sustainability that appeals, REVĪVŌ in Bali is the nearest thing in the catalogue, at a lower price and without the private island.

How do I get there?

Fly to Sihanoukville International Airport, which is about 25 minutes by road from the Song Saa Lounge on the mainland, then 45 minutes by speedboat to the island. Siem Reap connects by a 45-minute domestic flight and Phnom Penh is around three hours away by expressway. Shared boat transfers run three times a day in each direction and are included in the wellness journey price. Helicopter transfers can be arranged from either city.

Is this a medical wellness property?

No. There are no physicians, no diagnostics, no blood work and no clinical protocol. The journeys are built by therapists, trainers and holistic practitioners around consultation, treatment, movement and rest. If you want a medical assessment, Thailand is the right country and Chiva-Som or RAKxa the right properties. If you want to sleep, stop and be genuinely unreachable, this is better than either.

What is included in a wellness journey?

The villa, the return speedboat transfer, all meals, the consultations and treatments, personal movement sessions, outdoor immersions, meditation therapies, daily day spa access, both gyms, and drinks, herbal tea and fruit in the villa. The number of consultations and treatments scales with length: four nights gives two consultations and nine treatments, seven nights gives four consultations and nineteen. Tax and service charge are added on top.

How long should I stay?

Seven nights if the journey is the point. The travel in is a flight, a road transfer and a boat, and the seven-night version of each journey carries roughly twice the therapy of the four-night. Four and five nights work well if you are adding the island to a Cambodian trip that also takes in Angkor, which is what we would usually suggest.

When should I go?

November to April, the dry season. The south-west monsoon from May to October brings heavy rain and rougher water, which matters more here than it would elsewhere because the last leg of the journey is by speedboat. The resort stays open, but the crossing and the water-based activities are far better in the dry months.

Is it suitable for a couple, or for someone travelling alone?

Both, and the property has designed for each. The Couples Connection journey is built specifically around reconnection, and the villas are private enough that a couple never has to see another guest. Solo travellers do well on the Sacred Sleep, Digital Detox and Spiritual Awakening journeys, all of which are structured enough to give the days shape. What it is not is a place to meet people: there is no cohort and no shared timetable.
