Why Maldives
For thirty years the Maldives sold one thing: a villa over water and nothing to do. The wellness turn is recent, and at its best it is not a spa menu bolted onto a beach resort but a whole island built around a method, with the diving and the sunsets left in place as a bonus.
The argument for doing a programme here rather than in Europe is environmental. Warm water, no light pollution, no traffic, no schedule imposed from outside, and a horizon in every direction. Nervous system work, sleep programmes and stress recovery land differently in that setting, and the properties know it: sound therapy, hydrotherapy, halotherapy and movement analysis are the house specialities rather than blood panels.
The cost of that is distance and money. The Maldives is a long flight followed by a seaplane, and it is among the most expensive wellness destinations in the world once villa rates and programme fees are added together.
