Singing bowls set out for a sound therapy session at SEDA, JOALI BEING, part of the Mind pillar

Built around the Mind pillar, and the programme JOALI BEING itself puts forward first.

It is designed to manage stress and anxiety through mindfulness practices that cultivate a deeper awareness of feelings, thoughts, bodily sensations and surroundings. The core inclusions are an Integrative Lifestyle Assessment, a Watsu treatment in the KAASHI hydrotherapy hall, and a choice of Ayurvedic Abhyanga or Shirodhara, with sound therapy at SEDA running underneath.

This programme is priced for each booking. The property confirms it for your dates.

JOALI BEING, in detail

01

The property

JOALI BEING is the first wellbeing island in the Maldives, and the distinction matters. This is not a beach resort with a good spa attached: the whole island is organised around a method, with sixty-eight villas built to biophilic design principles, a Learning Centre running workshops with wellbeing experts, culinary maestros and herbalists, and transformational spaces where a beach club would normally be.

The method rests on Four Pillars, developed with Professor Gerry Bodeker of Oxford, a Harvard-trained expert in traditional and integrative medicine who chairs the Mental Wellness Initiative of the Global Wellness Institute: Mind, Skin, Microbiome and Energy. Programmes are assembled from those pillars after an Integrative Health Assessment and an Intelligent Movement Analysis, and run from five nights to three weeks.

More on the property

The house word for what it is aiming at is weightlessness, meaning freedom, lightness and wonder, and the island is committed to nature-immersive and responsible travel as the route to it. In practice that means a serious in-house team of naturopaths, therapists, movement experts and Ayurvedic doctors, an earth-to-table kitchen with full ingredient traceability, and the Maldives doing what it does best in the background.

The Four Pillars of JOALI BEING

Everything here is organised around four pillars, created with Professor Gerry Bodeker of Oxford. Mind cultivates contentment and peace of mind through sound therapy and mind-body practice. Skin illuminates the skin with rejuvenating therapies drawn equally from timeless ritual and current research. Microbiome builds a deeper understanding of the connection between body, mind and nutrition, and rebuilds eating habits around the body’s circadian rhythm. Energy rebalances the nervous system and optimises energy flow through intelligent movement and restorative therapy.

The offering draws on both modern science and ancient tradition, delivered by a dedicated in-house team of naturopaths, therapists, movement experts and Ayurvedic doctors rather than by visiting practitioners. That is the difference between a wellbeing island and a resort spa.

More on the four pillars of joali being

Programmes are personalised through two assessments: an Integrative Health Assessment and an Intelligent Movement Analysis, which together set the treatments, the experiences and the menus for the stay. Signature Wellbeing Programmes run from five nights to three weeks and are tailored to each guest’s needs and goals rather than sold as fixed itineraries.

The physical expression of the method is a set of dedicated spaces rather than a single spa. AREKA holds the Quiet Zones with separate male and female hydrotherapy areas, an ice grotto, sauna, steam, vitality pools and a garden. CORE is the movement and performance zone, fitted with Technogym and Nohrd equipment. SEDA is the sound therapy hall. KAASHI is the hydrotherapy hall, running everything from the stillness of Watsu to the intensity of an Aufguss sauna. A Turkish-style hammam and a salt inhalation room for halotherapy sit alongside them, and AKTAR is where the resident Herbologist makes the restorative teas, tonics and balms.

FLOW, the open-plan dining space at JOALI BEING housing three signature kitchens: Su, Plantae and B’Well

03

Earth to table

The culinary approach is an earth-to-table initiative built on ingredient traceability: fresh, locally harvested food that supports small farms and is sustainably sourced. Menus are customised to the guest and to their chosen programme, and are built around the body’s circadian rhythm as part of the Microbiome pillar rather than around a calorie count.

FLOW is the open-plan interactive dining space and holds three signature kitchens. Su serves ocean-to-table pescatarian cuisine, Plantae does nourishing vegetarian and vegan cooking, and B’Well carries the JOALI BEING signature menu with meat and poultry options. Between them a guest on a protocol and a guest who is not can eat at the same table without either compromising.

More on earth to table

MOJO is the tropical beach sanctuary on a three-layered sundeck, good for lunch and sundowners by the pool, and in the evening serving Japanese dishes from a menu designed by Michelin-starred chef Yamamoto Hidemasi. It is also home to the SAI tea lounge, where a resident tea sommelier runs ceremonies and learning sessions across a serious range of brews.

Beyond that: Ocean Sala Dining by the waves for grilled premium cuts, Japanese scallops, and lobster and tuna from Maldivian waters, and a Teppanyaki table for up to six with a view of the Gate of Zero. Bespoke dining can be arranged anywhere on the island, from a private sandbank to a turtle treehouse.

04

The island

Sixty-eight villas and residences with private pools, built to biophilic design principles: thirty-three beach villas and thirty-five water villas across thirteen categories, from one to four bedrooms. Each comes with special inclusions including a customised Wellbeing Bar setup and meditative musical instruments.

The wellbeing facilities are the largest structures on the island rather than a pavilion at the end of a path. AREKA, CORE, SEDA, KAASHI, the hammam, the salt inhalation room and AKTAR together give the island a treatment and movement capacity closer to a clinic than to a resort spa, alongside a sensory deprivation room and a hydrotherapy hall.

More on the island

The Learning Centre runs a programme of educational workshops and experiential classes with wellbeing experts, culinary maestros and herbalists, which is the part that determines whether anything survives the flight home.

Outside the programme there is a full Maldivian island to use: stand-up paddleboarding, diving and snorkelling with turtles, moray eels and manta rays, a Marine Centre where guests can earn a PADI licence, and luxury yacht or traditional Dhoni charters out to meet local Maldivian communities.

Villa rates are quoted per villa per night and the Wellbeing Programme is charged per person on top, so the villa rate alone understates the cost of a programme stay. Rates are subject to green tax and service charge. Signature Wellbeing Programmes start at five nights and run to three weeks. Programmes are personalised after an Integrative Health Assessment and an Intelligent Movement Analysis carried out on arrival, so the detailed itinerary is set on the island rather than in advance. Questions we are asked

Atmosphere, prices, alternatives

What is the atmosphere like, and who stays here?

Quiet, unhurried and design-led, with a much lower social temperature than a conventional Maldivian resort. Guests are largely couples and solo travellers on programmes, with some families taking the larger villas, and the mix is international with a strong European and Middle Eastern presence. Nature immersion is the organising idea, so the island is deliberately low-key rather than glamorous.

What makes JOALI BEING different?

It is a wellbeing island rather than a resort with a spa, and the difference is visible in the buildings: AREKA, CORE, SEDA, KAASHI and AKTAR give it clinic-scale treatment and movement capacity, with a hydrotherapy hall, ice grotto, sound therapy hall, halotherapy room, sensory deprivation room and a resident herbologist. The Four Pillars method was built with an Oxford professor, the team is in-house rather than visiting, and the kitchen runs three parallel cuisines so nobody has to eat apart.

How much does JOALI BEING cost?

Prices are being integrated. JOALI BEING quotes a villa rate per villa per night, with the Wellbeing Programme charged per person on top, and green tax and service charge added. Rates move with season. Contact us for a current quote and we will confirm it with the island.

What are the alternatives to JOALI BEING?

In the Maldives the closest comparisons are the wellness offerings at the larger island resorts, though few are organised around a method to this degree. Guests weighing JOALI BEING often also look at Zulal Wellness Resort in Qatar, which is far closer to Europe and built around traditional Arabic and Islamic medicine, and at COMO Shambhala Estate in Bali or Kamalaya in Thailand for a comparable programme depth in a jungle or hillside setting rather than on an atoll. For medical diagnostics rather than restorative work, Europe is the better answer.

What are the Four Pillars?

Mind, Skin, Microbiome and Energy, developed with Professor Gerry Bodeker of Oxford. Mind works through sound therapy and mind-body practice, Skin through rejuvenating therapies, Microbiome through nutrition and circadian eating, and Energy through intelligent movement and restorative therapy. Every programme is assembled from these rather than sold as a fixed protocol.

How long do I need?

Five nights is the minimum for a Wellbeing Programme and the shortest length at which the method has time to work. Programmes run up to three weeks. Given that reaching the island means a long-haul flight plus a forty-minute seaplane, seven to ten nights is the sensible target for a European guest.

Do I choose my programme before I arrive?

You choose the direction, but the detail is set on the island. An Integrative Health Assessment and an Intelligent Movement Analysis are carried out on arrival, and the treatments, experiences and menus are personalised from there by the in-house team of naturopaths, therapists, movement experts and Ayurvedic doctors.

How do I get there?

Fly to Velana International Airport in Malé, then a seaplane of roughly forty minutes to the island. Seaplanes operate in daylight only, so if your international flight lands late in the evening you will normally overnight in Malé and transfer the next morning. Plan the return leg the same way.

Can my partner come without doing a programme?

Yes, and the island is set up for it: diving, snorkelling, paddleboarding, the Marine Centre, tea ceremonies at SAI and excursions to local communities. There is also a Wellbeing Together programme designed for couples to do the work side by side.

Is the food restrictive?

No. FLOW runs three kitchens in parallel, pescatarian at Su, vegetarian and vegan at Plantae, and the signature menu with meat and poultry at B’Well, so a guest on a protocol and a guest who is not can eat together. Menus are customised to your programme and built around circadian rhythm rather than calorie restriction.
