Heckfield Place is a Georgian family home on a 438 acre working estate in a quiet corner of Hampshire, restored over more than a decade and reopened as a hotel with a genuinely unusual proposition: the land comes first. There is a biodynamic market garden, an organic home farm, an ancient arboretum, lakes you can swim in and woodland planted in the eighteenth century, and the kitchen cooks what was picked that morning.

Forty five rooms across the House and the East and North corridors, two cottages, a 1,200 bin cellar, a 67 seat screening room and two restaurants under Culinary Director Skye Gyngell, one of which holds a Green Michelin Star. It is forty minutes from Heathrow and just over an hour from London, which makes a three night stay practical in a way that almost nothing else of this standard is.

The wellness is delivered by The Bothy by Wildsmith, a digital free wellbeing house inside the estate with six treatment rooms, chlorine free waters, an outdoor thermal terrace and three movement spaces. It is not a spa in the hotel sense. It runs a naturopathic and energetic method, led by a Wellbeing Curator and a group of Master Practitioners chosen for intuitive ability as much as technical qualification, and it is open to guests aged sixteen and above.

The Bothy by Wildsmith

The Bothy brings the estate’s regenerative philosophy to the guest. The stated aim is to tend the whole rather than treat the part, with equal care for mind, body and self, and the practical expression of that is a personalised programme rather than a treatment menu.

A Bespoke Path is designed by the Wellbeing Curator and delivered by Master Practitioners across naturopathy, bioenergetics, osteopathy, craniosacral therapy, advanced reflexology, myofascial release, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, movement therapy, intuitive bodywork, nature therapy and reiki. The method blends those intuitive and naturopathic traditions with current science, working on immunity, metabolic health, neurological function and emotional wellbeing.

The most distinctive thing about it is that you are not told the plan. A health questionnaire and a pre-arrival consultation with wellbeing psychologist Amy Steadman shape the week, but the detail is deliberately withheld so guests arrive without expectations and the team can adapt as things surface. Around four to five hours of therapy run each day, and the programme is adjusted daily according to how you respond. Silence and time alone are treated as part of the method rather than as gaps in it.

The Bothy addresses causes rather than symptoms, and is aimed at chronic stress, burnout, feeling overwhelmed, loss of identity, grief, menopause and the need to rebuild confidence. There is no medical department: no doctor, no diagnostics, no blood work. This is naturopathic and energetic work, and it is very good at it.

Food at Heckfield

The belief at Heckfield is that the best tasting food is grown locally following biodynamic practice, and the estate is set up to prove it. The market garden and home farm supply the kitchens directly, and Culinary Director Skye Gyngell’s team cooks to the season and to what came in that day.

Marle is the main restaurant, pared back in style, built on the excitement of food served straight from the earth, and holder of a Green Michelin Star. Hearth is centred on an open fire and cooks simply with classic methods. The Moon Bar makes drinks and infusions from the freshest ingredients, and beneath the house a 1,200 bin cellar holds established and emerging producers to taste with the resident sommelier. Afternoon tea is served in the Glass House in the Upper Walled Garden.

Inside The Bothy, the Sun Room is an intimate dining space with a small plant based menu. Bespoke Paths include daily breakfast plus tea and cake in the Drawing Room, with other meals taken in the restaurants. There is no calorie restriction and no fasting protocol: the argument here is that food grown well and cooked simply is itself the intervention.

The estate

Forty five rooms and suites: thirteen bedrooms in the eighteenth century House, thirty one across the East and North corridors, plus two two-bedroom cottages. The signature rooms carry their own names, Ochre, Heath, Coppice, Lake and Long, and Church Lodge and Keeper’s Cottage sit separately on the estate. Rooms come with air conditioning, a coffee machine, a complimentary minibar of house-made snacks and drinks, Wildsmith Skin amenities, satellite television and nightly turndown.

The Bothy by Wildsmith runs to 17,000 square feet with six treatment rooms; The Waters, a chlorine free space using ionisation and natural minerals; the Oak Terrace for outdoor hydrotherapy and thermal experiences; an experiential shower; three movement spaces including two fitness rooms and a Movement Studio; and the Sun Room. Appointments run in three blocks, Dawn, Noon and Dusk, and at least three hours is recommended for a proper visit.

Beyond the wellbeing house the estate offers 438 acres with ancient woodland, lakes, gardens, orchard and home farm, wild swimming in the Lower Lake, miles of hiking trails, a private 67 seat screening room, private dining, and The Assembly, a year-round curated programme of cinema, speakers and hands-on workshops. Foraged cocktail workshops go out into the woodland with the bar team. Cycling, horse riding and clay pigeon shooting are all arranged locally, and there is antique shopping in Hartley Wintney and rowing on the Whitewater River.

The house style is lovingly restored Georgian and the atmosphere is relaxed luxury. Dress is casual, or smart casual in the restaurants. Around 200 full-time staff serve 45 rooms, and the wellbeing and fitness team numbers 32.

Retreat Day

A Path to The Bothy, day retreat

Length flexible · Price on request

A single day at The Bothy, and the least committing way to find out whether the method suits you.

Day Paths are themed, and past editions have covered energy, digestion and concentration; detoxification, microbiome and immunity; and ageing gracefully, longevity and hormone health. They are open to visitors as well as residents, which most of the estate is not.

Appointments run in three blocks, Dawn from seven until eleven, Noon from eleven until three, and Dusk from three until seven. At least three hours is recommended if you want to use the Waters and the Oak Terrace properly as well as taking a treatment.

Bespoke Path

Popular

3–7 nights · Price on request

The Bothy’s flagship, and a genuinely unusual piece of programme design: a hyper-personalised wellbeing journey whose contents you are not told in advance.

It begins before you arrive, with a health questionnaire and an online consultation with the wellbeing psychologist. From there the Wellbeing Curator builds a Path delivered by Master Practitioners across naturopathy, bioenergetics, craniosacral therapy, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, myofascial release, reflexology, intuitive bodywork, movement and nature therapy, running four to five hours a day and adjusted daily according to how you respond.

The method looks for causes rather than symptoms, works with the rhythm of the season, and treats silence and solitude as part of the therapy. Guests describe the hardest part as the emotional reflection and learning the truth about themselves, and the best part as the care, the quiet and the nature.

Retreat

Reconnect

3 nights · Price on request

The Bothy’s first group retreat, and the sociable counterpart to a Bespoke Path.

A four day, three night transformational experience for a small group of up to four people, running Sunday to Wednesday. It shares the Bothy’s naturopathic and energetic approach and its practitioners, but adds the thing a solo Path deliberately withholds: other people going through the same thing at the same time.

The frame is the estate itself. Sauna medicine, forest bathing, breathwork, movement and cold water immersion sit alongside the treatments, with all meals and refreshments and full access to The Bothy included.

Frequently asked questions

What is the atmosphere like, and who stays here?

Relaxed luxury in a restored Georgian house, with the estate rather than the spa as the centre of gravity. Roughly a quarter of guests return. The Bothy draws adults from eighteen up, women and men in roughly equal measure, most arriving with chronic stress, burnout, a sense of being overwhelmed, a life change to navigate, or grief. Silence is normal here and nobody will fill it for you.

What makes Heckfield Place different?

The land. A 438 acre biodynamic estate with its own market garden and home farm, feeding a Green Michelin Star kitchen, is not something a wellness hotel can retrofit. Add a genuinely intuitive wellbeing method, an undisclosed programme adapted daily by a Wellbeing Curator, and forty minutes from Heathrow, and you have something with no real British equivalent.

How much does Heckfield Place cost?

Prices are being integrated. Heckfield quotes a room rate per room per night, with the Bothy programme charged per person on top, so the room rate alone understates the cost of a wellbeing stay. Rates move with season and room category. Contact us for a current quote and we will confirm it with the house.

What are the alternatives to Heckfield Place?

Within the United Kingdom there is little of the same kind, which is much of the point. Further afield, guests weighing up Heckfield often also look at Six Senses Douro Valley or Ibiza for a comparable estate feeling with a broader spa, and at Euphoria Retreat in Greece for personalised programmes in a smaller house. If the goal turns out to be medical rather than naturopathic, Park Igls, Lanserhof and VIVAMAYR are the honest alternatives, and none of them will feel like this.

Do I find out what my programme involves before I arrive?

No, and that is deliberate. You complete a health and wellbeing questionnaire and have a pre-arrival consultation, but the detail of the Path stays undisclosed so you arrive without expectations. It also lets the Wellbeing Curator shape and reshape the days as things surface, which is how the method is meant to work.

Can I come with a partner who is not doing the programme?

You can, and the estate gives them plenty to do. But Heckfield genuinely recommends that a Bespoke Path be experienced alone, so there is time and space for reflection and self discovery. Two people can both do a Path together, and the house asks for full commitment and trust from both.

Is there a doctor or any medical testing?

No. There are no medical treatments, no diagnostics and no doctor at The Bothy. The work is naturopathic and energetic, delivered by Master Practitioners across naturopathy, bioenergetics, osteopathy, craniosacral therapy, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, myofascial release, reflexology and nature therapy.

How long should I stay?

Three nights and four days is the standard Bespoke Path and the average stay for programme guests. Longer resets of a week or more are available on request, and there are also one-day Paths for a first taste. Because there is no travel fatigue for a European guest, three nights here does more than three nights somewhere further away.

What is included in the programme price?

A Bespoke Path includes the pre-arrival consultation, four to five hours of daily therapy, accommodation, breakfast, tea and cake in the Drawing Room, and one post-retreat follow-up session. Other meals in Marle and Hearth are charged separately. Confirm the current inclusions when you request a quote.

How do I get there?

Heckfield is forty minutes from Heathrow, an hour from Gatwick, twenty five minutes from Farnborough and fifteen from Blackbushe, and just over an hour from central London by car. Windsor Castle and Stonehenge are both easy day trips.
