Marbella Club: Victoire’s Review

Victoire’s first-hand review of the Marbella Club: the park, the exceptional breakfast, breathwork facing the sea, six wellness programmes with post-stay follow-up, and how it compares with the Puente Romano next door.

Arriving at the Marbella Club is a step outside time and outside the world. It is a mix of Palm Beach, Mexico and Spain, and it gives you sun and warmth in Europe in the middle of winter, and full sun for the rest of the year. Everything here is beautiful and everything is chic. The hotel park is remarkable and the trees in it are genuinely impressive.

It is worth knowing what this place is before you book it. It is not a clinic and it does not pretend to be. It is a beachfront resort founded in 1954 that happens to run a serious wellness offer alongside everything else, which makes it one of the easier addresses to sell to somebody who is not sure they want a wellness holiday at all.

What I loved

  • The breakfast, which is exceptional. It is a mix of buffet and dishes cooked to order, and that combination is rarer than it should be.
  • The kindness of the teams. It is consistent and it is not performed.
  • The sport and relaxation classes included in the stay, and in particular a breathwork session facing the sea, which was unique.
  • The kids club, which the hotel says is the largest in Europe.

The rooms

The rooms are scattered through the park rather than stacked in a single building, which is a large part of why the place feels the way it does. The ones facing the sea are my favourites, and if you can have one, have one.

The food

Do not miss dinner at the hotel restaurant. It is exceptional, and it is the meal people tend to skip because they assume they should eat out.

Alongside it there is the beach restaurant with its palapa and pier, which is the image most people have of the Marbella Club, and La Bodega for wine. On the wellness side the hotel has a dedicated wellness chef and a resident nutritionist, so a programme guest and a non-programme guest can eat perfectly well at the same table.

The wellness

The wellness programmes run from a single day up to seven nights, which is unusually flexible, and every one of them opens with a Lifestyle and Nutrition Consultation. There are six of them, covering detox, de-stressing, sleep, fitness, gentle weight loss and a broader Mediterranean lifestyle programme.

The detail worth knowing, and the reason we recommend this address for maintenance stays rather than only for a first reset, is that each programme also closes with a post-stay assessment and ongoing follow-up with the experts. Structured support after you leave is rare at any price, and it is the part that decides whether a good week survives contact with your normal life.

The Puente Romano, five minutes away

The Puente Romano is a few minutes from the hotel on foot, and staying at the Marbella Club lets you use its offer as well. That matters more than it sounds, because the Puente Romano is a hotel of superlatives.

Its sports infrastructure is unlike anything else in Europe. The tennis club that hosts the Davis Cup is genuinely extraordinary, and there are many sports classes offered to members and hotel guests, including reformer pilates. Inside the hotel there is an impressive gym with a wide programme of included group classes, spinning and boxing among them. There are numerous pools with different atmospheres depending on what you are in the mood for.

The restaurant offer is frankly staggering. Coya, Nobu, Cecconi’s, Gaia. Whether you want to go out or stay quiet, whether you want Italian, Japanese, and there are three of those, Greek, Lebanese or anything else, it is possible. The hotel has more than twenty restaurants across a range of atmospheres, so it is impossible to be bored, but do remember to book.

How to choose between the two

It depends what you are looking for.

  • To go out and celebrate: Puente Romano.
  • To take sports classes all day long: Puente Romano.
  • For an exclusive atmosphere and a sense of being among your own: Marbella Club.
  • If breakfast is your favourite moment of the day: Marbella Club.
  • For children, both work well.
  • For tennis, Puente Romano is on site, but the Marbella Club is five minutes away.

Reality check

The beach is very pleasant, but the sand is not the sand of the Caribbean and it is not Pampelonne either. You cannot have everything.

And to be clear about what this is: there is no medical department here, no diagnostics and no screening. The team is made up of naturopaths, nutritionists, therapists and fitness experts, and the approach is deliberately gentle. If you want blood work and a diagnostic report, this is not the address. If you want a programme that fits inside a holiday your family will also enjoy, it is one of the best there is.
