Nobody asks whether The Ranch works. That was settled years ago by so many people who came home lighter, stronger and quite ecstatic about it.
The real question is rather, where a person with a job is supposed to find eight consecutive days, plus two more for the flights across America, plus the days it takes to recover from those flights?
Most of the potential clients did not go. For years, The Ranch remained something you admired from a distance and moved to a year with more room in it. There is always a year with more room in it. It is never this one.
Then The Ranch opened an hour from Manhattan and offered the same week in three (or four) nights.
This letter is about whether that works. The compression is not a softened version, it is a different proposition, and it suits some people exactly and others not at all. It is the second letter about the retreats in the world that both inspire and genuinely repair.

I. The Place
An hour from NYC, and a very long way from it
The estate sits in the Hudson Valley, about an hour north of New York City, and that single fact is doing most of the work. No red eye flight. No jet lag to absorb. No day lost at either end. You can close your laptop in the afternoon and be on a ridge before breakfast.
The place is a mansion of the old American kind, stone and dark wood and rooms built for a family who had staff. Around it, two hundred acres of woodland and trail. It offers six categories of room, from the Petite Deluxe up to the Hamilton and Morgan suites, and a proper spa: a solarium with a heated pool, an infrared sauna, and hot and cold plunges. The gym is quite big and really well equiped, but a lot of the workout is done with body weight anyway.
You will not spend much time in your room. Although they are really beautiful.

II. The Method
The same week, compressed
The day has a shape, and you do not choose it, which is the point.
A guided hike of two to four hours in the morning (yes, even in winter), over real terrain rather than a landscaped loop. Strength and core work. Restorative yoga. A therapeutic massage every single day, which is the detail people underestimate and the reason the second morning is survivable at all. Food is plant-forward, portioned, and served to everybody at the same time.
You are measured on arrival, body composition read on a Bod Pod, so there is a number at the start and a number at the end. Around that sit the optional additions, but they are really optional: intravenous therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, contrast hydrotherapy, colon hydrotherapy.
The group is the active ingredient, and it is the part that does not appear on any price list. Nobody negotiates with themselves about the morning hike when you lace your boots in the hall with a bunch of other really friendly people. Willpower when alone is not always reliable. With good company, it is super motivating.

III. Actual Benefits of Three Nights
The honest part
Some things compress and some things do not, and being clear about which is which is the difference between a good short stay and a disappointing one.
What compresses well: movement, because a body that has not been walked in months responds within days. Sleep, which usually breaks open on the second night. Appetite, because three days without sugar and alcohol changes what you want, not merely what you allow. And the interruption itself, which for a certain kind of person is the whole medicine.
What does not compress: behaviour. Anything that needs repetition to hold. Any protocol built on progressive load, where the fourth session is the one that matters. I have written elsewhere about why one week is rarely enough, and three nights at The Ranch Hudson Valley is a shorter version of that same argument, not an exception to it.
So be clear about what you are buying. Three nights is a stabilisation and a demonstration. It resets the dial and it shows you, in your own body, what the thing actually feels like. It does not rebuild your life.
Take the four nights if you can. The extra day is more than a quarter more programme, because it puts a second full cycle in, and the first morning is largely arrival.

IV. Hudson Valley or Malibu
Which one, and why
Malibu is the original, in the Santa Monica Mountains, and it is the harder proposition in every sense. You usually go there for six to eight nights ($7,600 to $9,500) but some guests stay 2 weeks and love it. The different cottages are quite the same, with minor differences. The week is longer than 3 or 4 days at The Ranch Hudson Valley: and it has a reputation it has earned.
You usually go to The Ranch Hudson Valley for three or four nights (from $2,575 for 3 nights and from $4,300 for four nights), but some guests stay 7 nights and love it. The room categories are quite different, you can choose depending on your comfort needs.
How to choose?
If this is your first and you have the time, the budget and the appetite, go to Malibu and do it properly. It is the deeper experience and there is no substitute for the week.
If what you need is something you can repeat several times during the year, without negotiating with your family or your colleagues, go to Hudson Valley. Four a year at three nights will do more for you over a decade than one heroic week you never manage to follow.
For anyone flying from Europe, Hudson Valley is also simply nearer, and that matters more than people admit when they are booking. If you want the Malibu numbers in detail, I have set them out here.
V. Practicalities
Prepare one thing properly. Break your boots in. This is the single mistake that spoils short stays, because on a three night programme a blister on the first morning costs you a third of the trip. There is no time to walk it off. I have written a whole piece on the right shoes and I stand by every word of it.
Who it is not for. Anyone who wants a spa. Anyone hoping to be told they are already doing well. Anyone who would resent being handed a timetable. And anyone whose real problem is exhaustion rather than inertia, because this is a programme that asks a great deal of you physically, and a depleted person needs something gentler first.
Perks we add. Our guests receive a $250 spa experience credit and early check-in or late check-out where availability allows, neither of which is available booking direct.

VI. About Hiking
After experiencing The Ranch Malibu or The Ranch Hudson Valley, people talk about the hiking less than you would expect. They talk about the group, the friends they made, and about how quickly their body accepted the demanding schedule.
That is the thing The Ranch is really good at. It's super structured and it leverages the power of the group dynamics. For three or four days you are not deciding anything, and deciding is more exhausting than it looks.
It is not the deepest or most medical programme we sell. But it is an excellent one for many objectives related to nature immersion, group dynamics, exercising, healthy food and discovering great lifestyle habits.
