Each guest has a different experience during a medical wellness stay: and of course, each of us comes with a different history, conditions, lifestyles, objectives …
But here is what a typical day looks like at Buff Medical Resort, the newest luxury Mayr Medicine clinic opened in 2025 on the shores of lake Konstanz in Germany.
We went to experience a full retreat at Buff in January 2026 and this review is based on the typical activities of a regular day during the program, i.e. not the first two days, not the last day either.
Wake-up
I set my alarm at 7am, with the objective of taking part to the 7:30 morning walk by the lake, a complementary group activity. I love such group activities, they are an opportunity to meet and exchange with other guests and members of the team, in addition to the enjoyment of the activity itself.
During a detox retreat, the sleep can be slightly disrupted, so I was actually up a little before the alarm rang. There is absolutely no city or street noise at Buff, so it’s really just the chemistry of the detox which has a slight effect on the sleep quality.
- Upon wake-up, I drank a glass of water with base powder as advised by the doctor assigned to me at Buff, Dr Julia Winkels. This is meant to keep the body as alkaline as possible during the detox cure, while the by-products of detox (i.e. toxins!) and fasting tend to make the body more acidic.
- It’s also the time I like to drink a good dose of herbal tea. You have a kettle in the room and 3 different kinds of herbal tea at Buff, from the brand Dr Joseph, which makes super pure (and good) products: one for the morning, one for the day, and the last one for digestion. Generally speaking, Mayr Medicine clinics encourage you to drink 2 to 3 liters per day, outside of the meals. Indeed, you are encouraged to not drink during the meals in a Mayr cure.
- The detox and the various supplements (Epsom salt for some guests, or the milder magnesium citrate for others) helps to purge the intestines. The toilets in the rooms at Buff are Japanese toilets, it’s so comfortable, a nice feel during those “body formalities” of the detox
And then, as mentioned, the hour-long morning walk. When I was there, with other guests we liked to have it quite sporty. We even had a chance to get coaching from Dr Claas Hohmann on speed walking. Dr Claas is the medical director of the clinic, but also an accomplished sportsman who practices every morning along the lake, and has a great technique to walk efficiently, slightly above 7 minutes per kilometer.
Back to Buff around 8:30, time for breakfast, which is actually served from 7:30 to 9:30, but most guest tend to have it around 8:00 or 8:30 in practice. It’s also the time when the sun raises, with stunning views over the lake Konstans from the windows of the restaurant, quite a scenery!
Morning
You typically get 2 or 3 consultations / treatments / activities in the morning.
Mornings are for consultations and treatments. You get a number of consultations during your stay: between the consultations with the Mayr doctor (every 2 days usually), nutrition consultations (twice per week usually), Ayurvedic medicine consultation if that’s relevant for your objective, cardiovascular health consultations (with their own MRI!), osteopathic consultation and therapies (Aaron Giuga was taking care of me during my stay at Buff, he is truly an exceptional practitioner, and also very knowledgeable in Traditional Chinese Medicine) …
Of course, prior to consultations, there are diagnostics and tests. The medical team performing these is exceptionally nice and caring, it’s a real pleasure. It nearly “feels good” to get a blood sample there! I also had a VO2Max test (spiroergometry) while I was there, and it was really interesting because it got interpreted by a former Olympics-level rowing champion. Besides, Buff offers state-of-the-art facilities for gait analysis, and they 3D-print insoles which are of great precision and quality.
And then there are all the treatments which facilitate the detox process and the various objectives of your program: the list of services offered at Buff is very long, and in my case I had IV infusions, IHHT, Soft Pack (a very relaxing experience), Ayurvedic massages, body scrub treatment, as well as colon hydrotherapy. Many guests also add the Apheresis treatment. Buff uses a particular apheresis technology which employs no potentially cancerogenous gas, unlike certain well known providers in this space.
There are also coaching sessions, which are really important if you’re considering adopting new lifestyle habits to improve your health. In my case, I had fitness coaching (mainly to get to know the latest generation of Technogym equipment, they’re quite impressive), Wim Hof breathing (to rebalance my sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems), special stretching techniques for my lower back presented by Aaron Giuga.
You are encourage to drink a lot outside of the meals, and there are herbal tea and water bars everywhere in the medical wellness facilities. Between 10 and 11am it is also possible to get some broth, and it is really delicious.
Lunch
Lunch is served between 11:30 and 1:30. Most guests are on a Mayr medicine diet. These diets have different stages, meaning you can eat more or less in quantity and in variety.
There is also the “Gourmet Diet” menu, which I followed during my program at Buff. For me it was enough to get my body into a detox mode: I didn’t need to send stronger signals and take the Mayr diet. With the “Gourmet Diet” menu at Buff, you get a choice of a starter and a main course. All healthy, all alcaline, and also - important to note - with enough to eat. I never got any feeling of starving, even though I was exercising in the gym rather seriously during my stay.
Afternoon
The afternoon is also dedicated to consultations, treatments and coaching sessions. Like in the morning, you typically get 2 or 3 sessions during the afternoon, depending on your program.
In the afternoon there are also group activities. I love to take part in them, I believe there are certain activities which are better enjoyed in groups : meditation in particular (Aaron Giuga led a particularly efficient meditation focusing on energizing the gut area), but also movement and Pilates (the sessions are rather gentle), and relaxation. There is a cooking class as well, where we were taught how to make the same broth, the chewing trainers (crackers) and got to asks the chef lots of questions and tips, directly in his cuisine.
When your agenda allows, you’re enjoying the extensive facilities: the indoor pool (15 meters) which extends into an outdoor pool (25 meters, heated all year round), the salt room, the various sauna and steam room, the ice bath … It is genuinely hard to get bored, all the more than such an experience invites you to take time, center yourself, and actually, not plan on doing much.
Dinner
Dinner is served between 5:30 and 7:30 which can seem quite early. This is meant to leave 2 hours of time between the end of your dinner and when you go to sleep. This is ideal for proper digestion.
The menu for the dinner is very similar to lunch. The menu changes every day, but don’t expect to much variety: Buff offers a very pure interpretation of Mayr medicine, and avoiding too much variety helps your gut digest easily, by knowing in advance what it will need to process.
Evening
You can relax by the fire in the lobby lounge, there is a pool and card games, a nice library, a special room with a high-end audio setup … You cannot get tired of the views over Lake Konstanz. But you also get those views from your room, so after the whole day of treatments and consultations, you may as well prefer to retire to your room.
You continue drinking lots of liquid to help the detox process. Buff also highly recommend to take a bath with some base salt, which deeply facilitates the cleansing process of the body. And it’s very relaxing, perfect before going to bed I my experience.
