Rancho La Puerta sits at the foot of Mount Kuchumaa in Tecate, Baja California, just one hour south of San Diego. Founded in 1940 by Edmond and Deborah Szekely, it is the original destination fitness resort and spa. The property spans 4,000 acres of high desert landscape with 40 miles of hiking trails, organic gardens, and 32 acres of landscaped grounds.
Each week, 100 to 125 guests arrive on Saturday for a seven-night stay. The schedule is flexible by design. Guests choose from dozens of fitness classes, guided mountain hikes, spa treatments, cooking workshops, and evening lectures. There is no fixed itinerary and no pressure to participate in anything specific.
The casitas are scattered across the grounds like a small Mexican village. Hand-painted tiles, wood-beamed ceilings, and museum-quality folk art give each one a distinct character. Most have fireplaces and private patios with garden or mountain views.
The property
Rancho La Puerta approach
The Ranch pioneered what is now called the "destination spa" model over 80 years ago. The philosophy is simple: move your body, eat clean food, rest well, and engage your mind. There is no medical protocol or clinical testing involved.
Fitness is central. The weekly schedule includes over 50 group classes ranging from circuit training and Pilates to tai chi and dance. Guided hikes up Mount Kuchumaa leave every morning at dawn. Afternoon workshops cover topics from breathwork to creative writing.
The spa program draws on both traditional Mexican healing and modern bodywork. Treatments use herbs and plants grown in the on-site organic garden at Tres Estrellas. Craniosacral therapy, Feldenkrais, Reiki, and deep tissue massage sit alongside herbal wraps and facials.
Eating at Rancho La Puerta
The kitchen has refined its approach over 85 years of daily practice. The cuisine is lacto-ovo vegetarian, built on produce harvested the same morning from the six-acre organic farm. Meals are low in fat, sodium, and refined sugar but generous in portion size.
Breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style with options like ranch granola, fresh tortillas, vegetable soups, and quinoa bowls. Dinner is a sit-down affair with dishes such as chile rellenos, fresh halibut Tecate style, and homemade pasta with porcini mushrooms.
A poolside juice bar, Tierra Alegre, serves fresh-pressed juices and smoothies made with farm ingredients throughout the day. La Cocina Que Canta, the on-site cooking school, hosts guest chefs from around the world for hands-on classes.
Spa, sports and facilities
The property covers 4,000 acres at an elevation of about 1,800 feet. The climate is warm and dry with over 300 days of sunshine per year. Architecture blends traditional Mexican hacienda style with modern comfort.
Three dedicated spa centres total over 24,000 square feet. The Villas Spa (13,372 sq ft) features a thermal circuit with hot tub, sauna, steam room, and cold plunge. The Women's Spa (5,825 sq ft) and Men's Spa (5,390 sq ft) each have private treatment rooms, relaxation lounges, and outdoor patios.
Sports facilities include tennis courts, a lap pool, a warm-water pool, and multiple fitness studios. The grounds contain labyrinth walks, meditation gardens, and an amphitheatre for evening performances. An organic farm and La Cocina Que Canta cooking school round out the property.

Voted #1 International Wellness Retreat in Travel + Leisure's 2026 World's Best Awards. Rancho La Puerta is the original destination fitness resort, founded in 1940, spread across 4,000 acres at the foot of Mount Kuchumaa. One all-inclusive weekly rate covers accommodation, three organic meals a day, 40-plus daily fitness classes, guided mountain hikes, evening programmes and lectures, and scheduled San Diego airport transfers on Saturdays.
Where is Rancho La Puerta located?
Rancho La Puerta is in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. It sits about one hour south of San Diego by car. The Ranch provides scheduled ground transport from San Diego International Airport every Saturday, included in the stay.
What programs does Rancho La Puerta offer?
The Ranch operates as a destination fitness resort and spa. Each week includes over 50 fitness classes, guided mountain hikes, spa treatments, cooking workshops, lectures, and evening entertainment. There is no fixed clinical program. Guests design their own schedule each day.
How long should I stay at Rancho La Puerta?
The standard booking is seven nights, Saturday to Saturday. This gives enough time to settle into the rhythm of daily movement, clean eating, and rest. Three- and four-night stays are available when space allows, but a full week delivers the best results.
Who is Rancho La Puerta best suited for?
The Ranch attracts active travellers who want to reset their habits in a beautiful setting. It works well for solo guests, couples, and groups of friends. The atmosphere is social but never forced. Guests seeking a medically supervised program would be better served by SHA Mexico or Buchinger Wilhelmi.
What is included in the weekly rate?
The rate covers seven nights of accommodation, three meals daily, and all fitness classes. Guided hikes, facility access, workshops, evening programs, and San Diego airport transfers are also included. Spa treatments and La Cocina Que Canta cooking classes carry an additional fee.
Is Rancho La Puerta suitable for solo travellers?
Very much so. About half of all guests arrive alone. The communal dining format, shared fitness classes, and evening programs make it easy to meet people. Ranchera Solo casitas are designed specifically for single occupancy.
How does Rancho La Puerta compare to other wellness resorts in Mexico?
The Ranch is the oldest destination spa in North America. It operates at a different price point and philosophy from clinical properties. SHA Mexico in Riviera Maya focuses on medical diagnostics and longevity protocols. Cal-a-Vie in California is the closest competitor in format, though it sits across the US border.
What does a week at Rancho La Puerta cost?
Weekly rates for 2026 start at $5,950 per person for a Ranchera Solo in regular season. Villas Cielo top out at $8,600 in high season. Rates are in USD. Mexican tax is additional. The price includes accommodation, meals, activities, and San Diego airport transfers.
Do I need a passport to visit Rancho La Puerta?
Yes. A valid passport is required, and guests complete the Mexican migratory form (FMM) on arrival. The Ranch is in Tecate, Baja California, about an hour south of San Diego.
Is the food strictly vegetarian?
The cuisine is lacto-ovo vegetarian with the option of fish and seafood. Almost everything is grown on the six-acre organic farm and harvested the same morning, with meals low in fat, sodium and refined sugar.
Can I use my phone at the Ranch?
Rancho La Puerta is a cellphone-free and smoke-free environment. Phones may be kept on silent for taking photos or connecting to Wi-Fi to check email, and dedicated phone booths are available for calls and video chats.
How physically demanding is a stay?
Guests should be comfortable walking an average of about four miles a day getting to and from activities, not counting the guided hikes. Fitness classes span every level, from gentle to vigorous, and participation is entirely your choice.
