I fixed my sleep at Lanserhof Sylt

A first-hand review of the Neuro Sleep Reset at Lanserhof Sylt. What the theta wave sessions are like, how you eat, what it costs, and what did not work.

Lanserhof is one of the best known names in wellness. Most people who follow this world have been to one of their addresses. Tegernsee, Lans, or Sylt. And Marbella launching in 2027. I'm often asked what each Lanserhof offers specifically: and which Lanserhof you choose depending on your objective.

I spent a week on the Neuro Sleep Reset at Lanserhof Sylt. It was one of the best weeks of treatment I have had anywhere. I want to describe it as precisely as I can, because the sleep program is unlike anything else I have tested. And so many people are looking for a great sleep program: here you go!

Sylt is worth the trip on its own

Start with the island. Sylt is the German Hamptons and it is a wonder. Yes I know it sounds far and getting there looks challenging. But it is easier than it looks, I'll explain how below.

On Sylt island, you can cycle into town and go shopping. Dior, Chanel and Hermes are there, you're not exactly in the middle of nowhere. There are Michelin-starred restaurants, cashmere boutiques, and Porsches everywhere.

Forty kilometres of beach run down the west coast. The light on the North Sea is worth the trip by itself.

Getting to Lanserhof Sylt

The resort sits in List, at the northern tip of the island. Sylt Airport is a 15-minute drive away, with seasonal flights from several German cities. I flew from Zurich, and flew back to Frankfurt.

However I then realised that Hamburg is a much better option when you want to come to Sylt. Hamburg Airport is around two hours by road. Transfers are included on stays of ten nights or more.

If you prefer the train, it is even easier: the line crosses the Hindenburgdamm causeway from Niebüll. Lanserhof picks you up at Westerland train station by car.

The architecture is a wonder

When you arrive, the building stops you. Christoph Ingenhoven designed it and it opened in summer 2022. The thatched roof covers 7,100 square metres and is the largest in Europe. It curves to follow the dunes behind it.

There are 55 rooms and suites. The medical floor holds a wide range of diagnostic equipment, including CT and ultrasound.

The rooms

Most rooms are duplexes. Bedroom and bathroom sit upstairs, with both a bath and a shower. Downstairs there is a sitting room and a separate WC. You choose between a sea view, which is what I always prefer, and a view over the dune at the back.

Single rooms are on one level and look onto the dune. They are comfortable and very pleasant. There is no bad choice here.

Move move move, all day long

The daily schedule is easy to follow.

  • 7am, beach walk. I never once tried it. Swimming first thing is the great pleasure of my life and I was not giving it up. The swimming pool had a little too much chlorine in my opinion, but the temperature was perfect.
  • 11am, Pilates. The teaching is among the best I have had in any hotel, and far better than anything I expected in a wellness clinic.
  • 2pm, Nordic walking on the beach. Pure happiness.
  • 4pm, yoga, meditation, or a mobility class. It rotates.

The gym is very well equipped. Most guests train a fair amount during their stay. There are also dedicated sports programs with a specific menu to support building muscle.

The coaches are excellent and some are sports scientists, which made the sessions genuinely interesting. I also liked their uniforms, much more fitting than in most clinics. Small details and elegance does matter.

If you want to do nothing at all, that is fine. Nobody pushes you and nobody judges.

The best treatments

Do not miss a massage with Félix. He is an exceptional therapist.

I loved the reflexology with Tobias. It is the right choice if you need to let go of something.

Across the board the massages are very good and the range on offer is astonishing.

How you actually eat

Lanserhof food is built on Mayr medicine and it is anti-inflammatory. The principle is simple. You give the digestive system very little to do, so the body can spend its energy repairing instead. Portions are small and you are taught to chew slowly. No alcohol, no coffee, no refined sugar.

Animal protein is available. Fish and meat are served every day to guests who want them.

For the radicals, fasting is possible. Otherwise you agree a level with your doctor. Menus run from 300 to 1,000 calories a day.

If you come with a different goal, such as sport, stress, or sleep, you can take the active menu at 1,700 calories. That was my case. It was almost too generous. I did not finish everything and I still lost weight during the week.

Breakfast is a choice of shake or porridge, plus options such as yoghurt, avocado, or smoked fish. There is bread (don't eat too much bread of you're there to loose weight!). There is also an almond butter which I absolutely loved.

Lunch is the main meal of the day. Protein, veggies, carbs, and for some guests a dessert. Dinner is vegetables, with protein for those whose program allows it.

Anke runs the restaurant team and they are adorable. They will find a solution for anything.

How Sylt compares with Lans and Tegernsee

All three Lanserhof resorts run the same Mayr medicine foundation. The differences are setting, atmosphere, and medical emphasis.

  • Lans is the original, above Innsbruck in the Tyrol. It is the quietest of the three and the most straightforwardly medical. It is also usually the least expensive, starting from €5,390 a week.
  • Tegernsee sits in the Bavarian Alps by the lake Tegernsee. It has the deepest diagnostic equipment and the most polished feel, at roughly €8,435.
  • Sylt sits between the dunes and the Wadden Sea. It draws the most international crowd and it is where the sleep and stress work happens. A week runs around €6,480 but there are periods with special offers and even better prices. Ask us if you're interested.

We have compared the three Lanserhof resorts and what each week costs in detail. If you are choosing your first Lanserhof, read that first.

Why I booked the sleep program

For nearly two years, because of my personal situation, I had been waking in the middle of the night with panic attacks. That turned into long stretches of insomnia.

Falling asleep was never the problem. Once awake at night, I could not get back to sleep before 5.30 or 6am. I started my days exhausted before they had begun.

When I first heard about the sleep program at Lanserhof, I was sceptical. I have tested many and none of them worked for me. A week of massages does not cure insomnia. You sleep while you are there, you go home, and everything comes back. It is so frustrating.

The first two days are diagnostics

The first two days set everything up. You see the doctor, you have full blood work, and you see a psychologist to understand what took your sleep away in the first place.

That part is not easy. It is essential.

For me the appointments with the doctors, the psychologists, and the nutritionist were a real wake up call. I had known for a long time that I needed to change several things in my life. There I finally understood why I could not carry on as before.

It was freeing, frightening, and galvanising at the same time. One thing is certain. I came home stronger than I have ever been. I trust my ability to make the changes I need and I feel capable of making them.

I also slept. I ate. I got some distance from a situation that had felt impossible.

Three days of theta wave training

Then the treatment itself starts.

The brain produces theta waves in order to fall asleep. A machine reads your own theta production, reformulates it, and feeds it straight back into your brain. You sit with a headset on for five sessions a day and your brain relearns how to sleep. Lanserhof counts 15 sessions across the three days.

The 9am session is a pleasure because you fall back asleep. The 1pm session is a nap, and 5pm is a second nap. The 11am and 3pm sessions are harder because sleep does not come as easily. They are still useful.

To answer the obvious question, yes, I slept at night as well. Very well most nights, in fact. I had a lot of sleep to catch up with anyways.

What changed once I got home

The result is remarkable and seems to hold! Fingers crossed ... I still wake up at night sometimes, but I fall back asleep almost instantly. This is a huge change for me.

Occasionally I think about my sessions at Lanserhof, my brain decides it is capable of going back to sleep, and it does. It is astonishing.

I wake up in good shape now. I need fewer hours than before. My daughters would tell you I smile more and snap less.

The final two days of the sleep program at Lanserhof are for putting the routine together. You feel good, you get massages, you train, and you go home in the best possible shape.

Reality check

There is a real problem with housekeeping at Lanserhof Sylt. And it is mildly irritating for me, I have no tolerance for this kind of basics in luxury hospitality. However in the end the place is so beautiful and the room so comfortable that you stop caring. To be fair, Raul at reception does his best to find solutions. He is genuinely lovely. It remains to be seen whether he stays on Sylt or goes to open Marbella, which is what he dreams of.

I also had the worst facial of my life at Lanserhof Sylt, across every category - clinics, hotels, beauty salons, all of them. There was no explanation of the protocol and the therapist was odious with me. It is rare to meet somebody who listens so little. It was the first time I have ever stopped a treatment halfway through without finishing it. These things happen, it's really not pleasant, but overall it's a detail. It gave me the opportunity to see how seriously Lanserhof owners take feedback.

The beauty of the place and the kindness of the teams make you forget these annoyances and enjoy an unforgettable week.

The other guests make the place

What makes Lanserhof Sylt unique is the vibe among the guests. Almost everybody is happy to be there and happy to talk.

In the evening you end up on the terrace that doubles as the smoking area, laughing and putting the world to rights. The ones on the very low calorie menus have lost most of their filter by then. The days are exceptional.

I met wonderful people and had more fun than I have had in years - yes, even though this is a health resort and I also travel to the best leisure hotels around the world! There is something really special about the atmosphere and the connexion between guests at Lanserhof.

What does it cost

The Neuro Sleep Reset is a three-day module inside a minimum stay of seven nights. Lanserhof prices the package from around 7,394 euros per person with accommodation, before supplements and medication.

Shorter stays are possible at Lanserhof Sylt as well. There are four-night programs around the 3,000 euro mark. The classic Lanserhof cure sits below the sleep package, and the longevity and men's health programs are more expensive.

Who should go

The sleep program suits anyone whose nights have been broken for months. It is built for people who have already tried the softer options and want a medical answer.

If you simply want rest, good food, and daily Pilates by the sea, the classic cure at Lanserhof Sylt does that beautifully. You do not necessarily need the neuro package to get value from the week.

If I wanted to go back to a clinic, it would probably be Lanserhof, because I loved the atmosphere that much. Worth doing once in your life, as a bet on yourself and on getting durably better.
