Chiva-Som, in detail

The property
Chiva-Som opened in Hua Hin in 1995 and is, by common consent, the property that created the Asian destination health resort. Almost every wellness retreat that followed in the region is measured against it.
It sits on seven acres of beachfront gardens on the Gulf of Thailand, about three hours by road from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport, which is how the vast majority of guests arrive. The name means Haven of Life.

The approach is deliberately personal rather than protocol-driven. Guests arrive, sit down with a Health and Wellness Advisor, and the retreat programme is selected and shaped around them at that point rather than booked in advance. Six modalities underpin everything: Spa, Holistic Health, Physiotherapy, Aesthetic Beauty, Fitness and Nutrition.
The resort is adults-only, keeps a firm digital-detox policy in the communal areas, and runs an unusually high staff-to-guest ratio. Its sister property, Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som, is in Qatar.

Wellness by Chiva-Som
Chiva-Som describes its own method as promoting lifestyle transformation and providing the right balance between body, mind and spirit. In practice that means a large multidisciplinary team and a programme assembled per guest rather than sold off a shelf.
Everything begins with an individual health and wellness consultation on arrival, optionally supported by physical analysis and a skin consultation. From there the Health and Wellness Advisor selects the retreat programme and personalises it around the guest’s objectives, preferences and health profile.

The six modalities are Spa, Holistic Health, Physiotherapy, Aesthetic Beauty, Fitness and Nutrition, and a single retreat will typically draw on several of them. Facilities include a water therapy suite, a bathing pavilion, hydrotherapy, floatation, a Neurac room, a re-functional studio and a full gymnasium.
Genomic testing is available, both Vital and Longevity panels, for guests who want their programme informed by their genetics.

Cuisine
The award-winning food and beverage at Chiva-Som is centred on a simple proposition: that good food is good life. Meals are built to serve as both a foundation of health and a source of pleasure, which is why the cuisine is one of the things returning guests cite most.
Three wellness cuisine meals per night of stay are included, beginning with dinner on the evening of arrival. Menus are adjusted to the guest’s programme and dietary needs, and specially formulated cleansing diets are used on the detox retreats.

Much of the produce comes from the resort’s own organic garden. A wellness minibar is included in every room, and dining runs across several venues including Taste of Siam and the Orchid Lounge.

The beach resort
Seven acres of beachfront gardens, with twelve room and suite categories running from the Ocean Room to the 200 sqm Leelawadee Suite. Accommodation splits between ocean-facing rooms and free-standing Thai Pavilions built in teakwood and bamboo.
The wellness facilities include a bathing pavilion, a water therapy suite, hydrotherapy, floatation, steam, sauna, jacuzzi, cold plunge pool and swimming pools, all unlimited for guests in-house.

The fitness side comprises a full gymnasium, a multi-functional room, a re-functional studio, a Neurac room and Galileo vibration training, supporting up to nine classes daily.
Medical and aesthetic services include a Medi-Spa, skin and facial analysis, LPG and Picosure technology, and consultation rooms for naturopathy and physiotherapy. Pineapple Valley Golf Club, rated in Asia’s top three by Asian Golf Monthly, is twenty minutes away and used for the golf retreat.

Rates are quoted per person per night in Thai Baht and are subject to 17.7% service charge and VAT. Chiva-Som sells two products off the same room. A retreat stay includes accommodation, full board, one daily treatment and a retreat programme selected on arrival with a Health and Wellness Advisor. Chiva-Som Essentials includes everything except the retreat programme, at around 20 to 25 per cent less. Minimum stay is three nights for a retreat and two nights for Chiva-Som Essentials. Retreat minimums vary by programme, from three nights up to ten for Cell Vitality, Cranial Relief and Tension Release. From 20 December to 5 January, rooms can only be booked at double occupancy for a minimum of seven nights, and a compulsory per-person supplement applies for the New Year’s Eve gala dinner. Serene Getaway offer: new retreat bookings of five nights or more for stays between 1 June and 30 September 2026 receive one complimentary night for every four paid, VIP fast-track service on arrival at Suvarnabhumi and round-trip airport transfers. Not combinable with other offers, and full prepayment is required at confirmation. Early Bird offer, valid for stays until the end of 2027: save 20% on retreat bookings confirmed 120 days or more before arrival, with a minimum three-night stay, or 15% on retreat bookings confirmed 90 to 119 days before arrival, with a minimum five-night stay. Rates begin from THB 20,000++ per person per night. Transfers from Bangkok are around three hours by road. A Mercedes-Benz E-Class for two is THB 10,000 each way, an S300 THB 14,000 and an S350d THB 15,000; a Toyota Commuter for six is THB 10,000 and an Alphard or V-Class for four is THB 15,000. VIP welcome and fast-track at Suvarnabhumi is THB 2,800 per person each way. Chiva-Som is adults-only. Mobile phones, cameras and personal computers are not to be used in communal areas.

Do I choose my retreat programme before I arrive?
No. A suitable retreat programme is selected shortly after arrival, during an initial consultation with a Health and Wellness Advisor, who personalises it around your individual needs, preferences and objectives. You choose the length of stay and the room when you book; the programme itself is shaped on site.
What is the difference between a retreat stay and Chiva-Som Essentials?
They share identical inclusions except one: Essentials does not include a retreat programme. You still get accommodation, three wellness cuisine meals a night, a wellness consultation, one daily treatment, the daily classes and unlimited use of the facilities. Essentials is around 20 to 25 per cent less and has a two-night minimum rather than three.
How do I get to Chiva-Som?
Most guests take a limousine transfer from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport, which takes around three hours. Hua Hin has its own small airport about twenty minutes away. Round-trip transfers are included on the Serene Getaway offer.
Is a treatment included every day?
Yes. Every night of stay includes one daily treatment, chosen from Traditional Thai Massage, the Chiva-Som Signature Massage, Invigorating Massage, Relaxing Foot Massage, Oriental Scalp Massage, the Spa Haven Body Polish, hydrotherapy options including Detoxifying Balneotherapy, Floatation Therapy and Body Jet Blitz, or a manicure or pedicure. Retreat guests receive their programme treatments in addition.
Can I bring children?
No. Chiva-Som is an adults-only resort, and asks that mobile phones, cameras and personal computers are not used in communal areas so that the environment stays restful for everyone.
How does Chiva-Som compare to Kamalaya and RAKxa?
Thailand's three flagship wellness addresses serve different guests. Chiva-Som is the pioneer, a beachfront property three hours by road from Bangkok. The treatment menu is very broad, and superstars and unknown guests are treated alike, very well, with discretion. Kamalaya on Koh Samui is the most soulful, strongest on burnout and emotional recovery. RAKxa near Bangkok is the most medical, with an integrative approach. For a first Thai retreat, Chiva-Som is often the top recommendation.
