Amanemu is Aman’s onsen house, set above Ago Bay inside Ise-Shima National Park, and it is the property in the group where wellness is the reason for the building rather than an amenity within it. The architecture takes its cues from the minka, the traditional Japanese farmhouse, and the whole place is organised around mineral-rich hot spring water.

The spa runs to two thousand square metres and is built, in Aman’s own framing, around the restorative power of water, drawing on a bathing tradition that Japan has practised continuously since the sixth century. Every suite has its own private onsen, which is not a luxury flourish so much as the mechanism: the therapy here is taken twice a day in your own room rather than booked as a treatment.

It is also one of only five Aman houses worldwide running the group’s multi-day Wellness Immersions, alongside Amanpuri, Amanoi, Amanbagh and Amanyara, with dedicated detox and cleansing and recovery and recuperation programmes. Around it sits the Ise Jingu sacred forest, Japan’s most important Shinto site, where the forest bathing and meditation sessions are held.

Onsen, kampo and the Ise Jingu forest

The method starts with the water. Amanemu is fed by a mineral-rich hot spring, and the property is arranged so that bathing is the spine of the day rather than an event: a thermal spring garden with daybeds, two private onsen pavilions in the spa, and a private onsen in every suite. Guests who arrive sceptical of hot water as therapy tend to change their minds by the second night, largely because of what it does to sleep.

Medicinal Bathing is the formalised version. Three therapeutic bath types, based on the essential elements of Eastern medicine, are taken in the private onsen pavilions, which is a considerably more structured proposition than simply using the baths.

Kampo, the Japanese adaptation of Chinese herbal medicine, runs through the Seasonal Spa Journey, which uses kampo formulations aligned to the rhythms of the year rather than to a diagnosis. Acupuncture, shiatsu and moxibustion are all available and delivered with the precision and lack of theatre that characterises Japanese treatment practice.

The Essence of Tokowaka is the house signature: six yoga sessions paired with six treatments, designed to bring body and mind back into alignment with the elements and the chakras. Forest bathing and meditation take place in the sacred forests of Ise Jingu, with an optional visit to the Izawa-no-miya shrine, and the Sacred Dance lesson teaches Saishi-mai, the Shinto ritual dance, accompanied by gagaku, the ancient court music.

What Amanemu is not is a clinic. There is no physician, no diagnostic panel and no medical protocol. This is bathing, bodywork, herbal medicine and forest practised at a very high level, which is a different proposition from measurement.

Ise-Shima on the plate

Daily breakfast and dinner are included with every stay, which is unusual for Aman and reflects how much of the day here happens on the property.

Ise-Shima is one of Japan’s great food regions, known particularly for its seafood, its pearl diving tradition and its role supplying the Ise Jingu shrine. Washoku, traditional Japanese cuisine, is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list and is by accident of history very close to an ideal wellness diet: fish, fermented foods, seaweed, seasonal vegetables, small portions, almost no dairy or sugar.

The practical consequence is that nothing needs to be modified to make the food work for a wellness stay. There is no diet version of the menu because the menu is already the thing. The detail of the restaurants and the specific programme menus is not published by Aman and is on the list to confirm.

Two thousand square metres of spa, and seven private onsen

The spa covers two thousand square metres and holds four treatment suites, two private onsen pavilions for bathing, an Aqua Movement Suite, and a hydrotherapy area with sauna, steam room and changing facilities. There is a finishing salon for manicures and pedicures, strength training and cardiovascular equipment, a Power Plate platform and an outdoor yoga deck.

The main thermal spring garden is the centre of the property, fed by the mineral hot spring and laid out with daybeds. Alongside it, the two separate onsen pavilions allow private bathing, which is what makes the Medicinal Bathing programme possible.

Accommodation is split between suites and villas, all of them with a private onsen bath. The villas are two-bedroom and take extensive indoor and outdoor living space; the suites combine bedroom and living area. Both draw on minka farmhouse architecture, and the categories are named for what they look onto: Mori for the garden, Sora and Nagi for Ago Bay, Tsuki for its own garden and bathing pavilion.

Outside, Ise-Shima National Park runs down to a heavily indented coastline of pearl farms and small islands, and the Ise Jingu shrine complex, the most sacred site in Shinto, is within reach for the forest bathing sessions.

Programs

Detox & Cleansing Immersion

3–7 nights · Price on request

Aman’s multi-day Wellness Immersion focused on detoxification and cleansing, offered at only five houses in the group. It is personalised after an assessment rather than delivered as a fixed protocol.

At Amanemu the detoxification work is built on the hot spring water, with medicinal bathing, kampo herbal formulations and bodywork rather than on a fasting or supplement regime. Minimum three nights, with five to seven recommended for an Immersion to do its work.

Essence of Tokowaka

Popular

5–7 nights · Price on request

The house signature and the fullest structured programme at Amanemu. Six yoga sessions are paired with six treatments, designed to guide body and mind gently back into alignment with the elements and the chakras.

The pairing is the idea: each yoga session prepares the body for the treatment that follows it, rather than the two running as separate strands. Given the six-and-six structure, plan on at least five nights.

Forest Bathing and Meditation in the Ise Jingu Sacred Forests

1 nights · Price on request

Guided shinrin-yoku with meditation and breathing exercises in the sacred forests of Ise Jingu, the most important Shinto site in Japan, with an optional visit to the Izawa-no-miya shrine.

Forest bathing is a Japanese invention with a domestic research literature behind it, and this is the version that is difficult to replicate anywhere else: woodland that has been maintained continuously for roughly two thousand years for religious reasons.

Medicinal Bathing

1–3 nights · Price on request

The formalised version of what Amanemu is built for. Three therapeutic bath types, based on the essential elements of Eastern medicine, taken in the spa’s two private onsen pavilions.

It is the most distinctive short offering here, and the reason to book it rather than simply using your own onsen is that the compositions and the sequence are chosen for you.

Retreat Day

One-day Wellness Programme

1 nights · Price on request

A condensed, personalised version of what the house does, built into a single day. It is the practical option for guests on a short stay or arriving at the end of a longer Japanese itinerary with only one day to give it.

Recovery & Recuperation Immersion

3–7 nights · Price on request

The second of Aman’s multi-day Immersions offered here, aimed at recovery and recuperation, whether from illness, overwork, travel or physical strain.

It draws on the full range of the property: thermal bathing, the Aqua Movement Suite, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, shiatsu and moxibustion, with forest bathing in the Ise Jingu sacred forests as the outdoor component.

Seasonal Spa Journey

1–3 nights · Price on request

A spa journey using kampo herbal formulations aligned to the rhythms of the year. Kampo is the Japanese adaptation of Chinese herbal medicine, and it is prescribed seasonally rather than diagnostically, so what you receive in November is not what you would receive in April.

Rooms & suites

The most distinctive villa: it overlooks its own verdant garden and has a separate pavilion holding hot spring fed baths both indoors and out. For guests who want the onsen experience at its fullest without leaving their own accommodation, this is the category.

Sora Villa

Sleeps 6

A two-bedroom villa with views over Ago Bay and dining capacity for up to six guests, which makes it the most sociable of the villas for a group travelling together.

Nagi Villa

Sleeps 6

A two-bedroom villa overlooking Ago Bay with a private garden of its own, for up to six guests. Combines the best view on the property with the space and separation of a villa.

Mori Villa

A two-bedroom villa with garden views and a private courtyard, taking extensive indoor and outdoor living space and accommodating up to six guests. The choice for a family or two couples travelling together.

Nagi Suite

A suite looking directly over Ago Bay with a combined bedroom and living area. The best of the suite categories for the view, and the one to take if the water is the reason you are coming.

Sora Suite

Double occupancy

A suite with partial sea views towards Ago Bay and a combined bedroom and living area. The bay is unusually still, dotted with pearl farms and small islands, and it is the view the property is arranged around.

Frequently asked questions

What is the atmosphere like, and who stays here?

Extremely quiet and pared back, in the register of a minka farmhouse rather than a resort. The property is small, the bay is still, and there is very little to do that is not bathing, walking, eating or being treated, which is the intention. Guests are largely international couples, often on a wider Japan itinerary, with a strong contingent returning specifically for the onsen.

What makes Amanemu different?

A private onsen in every room, a two thousand square metre spa built around hot spring water, and the Ise Jingu sacred forest next door, inside one of only five Aman houses running multi-day Wellness Immersions. Add kampo herbal medicine, Medicinal Bathing as a formal protocol, and Saishi-mai Shinto ritual dance taught with gagaku accompaniment, and there is nothing comparable anywhere.

How much does Amanemu cost?

Prices are being integrated. Aman does not publish rates for any property, so every stay is quoted individually, with daily breakfast and dinner and one private experience per day included and the wellness programme charged separately. Contact us and we will get a current quote directly from Aman.

What are the alternatives to Amanemu?

In Japan, Six Senses Kyoto is the urban counterpart: a city hotel with the only dedicated Watsu pool in Kyoto, far less of a retreat and far easier to combine with sightseeing. Within Aman, Amanbagh in Rajasthan and Amanpuri in Thailand run the same Immersions in completely different traditions. For thermal bathing as the centre of a stay elsewhere, Grand Resort Bad Ragaz in Switzerland and Palace Merano in Italy are the European equivalents.

Does every room really have its own onsen?

Yes. Every suite and villa has a private onsen bath fed by the mineral hot spring, and that is the point of the property rather than a flourish. It also solves the tattoo question that makes traditional Japanese public bathing difficult for many international guests: you are never obliged to use a communal bath.

What is Medicinal Bathing?

The structured version of what everyone here does informally. Three therapeutic bath types, based on the essential elements of Eastern medicine, taken in the spa’s two private onsen pavilions. It turns thermal bathing from a pleasant habit into an actual protocol.

What is the Essence of Tokowaka?

The house signature programme: six yoga sessions paired with six treatments, designed to guide body and mind back into alignment with the elements and the chakras. It is the most complete single offering here short of a full Wellness Immersion.

Is Amanemu a medical property?

No. There is no physician, no diagnostics and no medical protocol. What there is instead is onsen balneotherapy, kampo herbal medicine, acupuncture, shiatsu, moxibustion, forest bathing in a sacred forest and a very good spa. If you want to be measured, Japan is the wrong country and we would point you at Austria or Switzerland.

What is the forest bathing here?

Shinrin-yoku, guided, in the sacred forests of Ise Jingu, which is the most important Shinto site in Japan and has been maintained as woodland for roughly two thousand years. There is an optional visit to the Izawa-no-miya shrine. This is not a walk with a nice name attached: the forest and its religious history are the reason it works.

How do I get there?

Nagoya is the nearest major airport at about two hours by road, Kansai is around three, and Kyoto is roughly two and a half to three hours. Ugata station is ten minutes away for guests arriving by train. Most guests fold Amanemu into a longer Japanese itinerary rather than flying in for it alone.
