For decades, the top medical wellness clinics focused almost exclusively on the body. Detox, metabolic reset, weight management, anti-ageing. The programs were built around blood work, calorie restriction, and physical treatments. Mental health, if addressed at all, was a side effect of physical improvement.
That is changing. The fastest growing demand in luxury medical wellness is emotional wellbeing and mental health, and Palace Merano is one of the clearest example of it: the clinic opened a department dedicated to the subject in 2024.
What is driving the shift
Two things. First, guest demand. Returning clients are asking for something that addresses stress, anxiety, and emotional tension. No amount of phyto-mud wraps can reach that. Many guests arrive at a clinic physically fit but mentally exhausted. A detox protocol alone will not fix that.
Second, the science. Research on the vagus nerve, the gut-brain axis, and the measurable effects of breathwork on cortisol has changed the picture. Health resorts now have a the scientific methods they can integrate into programs that previously felt too "soft."
Palace Merano Relax & Balance
Palace Merano opened its Relax & Balance department in 2024, and the programme that carries the same name costs 5,200 euros for 7 nights. It combines flotation sessions, music therapy, breathwork directly inspired by yoga and pranayama, as well as mindfulness within the existing framework of Palace Merano. Three mandatory medical consultations are charged separately from the program (332 euros).
Guests still receive blood work, bio-impedance analysis, and a medical consultation. But the program schedule centres on emotional release rather than physical detox. Flotation therapy (lying in a sensory-deprivation tank of body-temperature saltwater) is used to lower cortisol and quiet the nervous system. Yoga massages target psychophysical tension. Music therapy sessions use sound and rhythm to process emotional blockages.
What makes this interesting is the context. Palace Merano is not a yoga retreat or a meditation centre. It is a medical spa with a laboratory, a scanning facility and doctors on staff, and the Relax & Balance programme sits alongside Detox & Longevity and Sport Performance in the same building. Guests who arrive for detox sometimes add Relax & Balance treatments to their schedule when they realise their stress levels need more than physical intervention.

SHA Wellness Clinic Rebalance & Energize
SHA in Spain comes at the same problem from a different angle. Rebalance & Energize is the entry-level programme of SHA, but it was built for chronic stress, and it blends medical diagnostics with ozone therapy, non-invasive neuromodulation, acupuncture, osteopathy and structured physical training. And of course the diet is tailored around all of it. The aim of this program is to restore homeostasis and rebuild energy production at cell level. It's interesting to note the central role of mental health and balance in this program, in particular because of the way Dr. Philippa Harvey runs her TCM and acupuncture consultations.
The shortest duration of the SHA Rebalance & Energize program is four nights (2,500 euros), but the longer durations provide stronger benefits: seven nights (4,375 euros), ten nights (6,250 euros) and fourteen nights (8,750 euros).
If the concern is cognitive performance rather than exhaustion, the programme to look at instead is Leader’s Performance.

Euphoria Retreat in Greece
Euphoria Retreat in Mystras, Greece, was designed from the ground up around emotional and spiritual wellbeing. The architecture references the healing traditions of Byzantium. The program framework draws on Eastern philosophy, psychology, and movement practices.
Unlike Palace Merano or SHA, Euphoria added the medical component of the programs more recently, and the core of the experience is experiential: forest bathing, Byzantine hammam rituals, emotional coaching, breathwork and body-mind movement.
Euphoria is a great choice for guests who do not want or need a medical framework, and it is also the least expensive of the four. Emotional Harmony is a five days program at 2,440 euros (3,549 euros for the 7 days option). Feel Alive Again is the short version, three days only, at 1,254 euros. The fuller Emotional and Physical Transformation retreat is truly transformational. It exists as a group program (4,613 euros) and as an individual, private program (4,935 euros). The setting in the Peloponnese and the energy of the place does a great deal of the work.

Six Senses Vana in India
Six Senses Vana in Dehradun works on emotional wellbeing through Ayurvedic and yogic traditions (and a little bit of TCM thanks to the resident expert Dimple Raghuvanshi. Each guest at Six Senses Vana fundamentally needs a certain level of work on sleep and emotional balance, and the programs are indivually designed to address that.
The most famous programs at Six Senses Vana are the Yoga program, the Yogic Detox, the Tibetan Medicine program and the Ayurveda Panchakarma. They all involve deep work on the mind and the emotions, and use breathwork, singing bowls, as well as watsu / floating therapy. Whether it's for a short five-night experience, or a twenty-one nights full rebirth program like Panchakarma, these simple practices are at the core, and Six Senses Vana teaches guest to use them well.
Another strong and simple practice is walking in nature. Six Senses Vana even structured a program around it: Stress Relief Hiking, which pairs walking in the Himalayan foothills with treatments afterwards.
The approach is less clinical than Palace Merano or SHA, at least on the surface. Vana does not use Western medical diagnostics, but it creates tangible measures with the use of Ayurvedic medicine indicators. Besides the Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis and tongue assessment, it uses tech-based measures which allow to enrich the consultation with the expert Ayurvedic doctors. The depth of these consultations is impressive.
The prices at Six Senses Vana vary depending on the legth of stay and the intensity of the treatments desired. For example the Stress Relief Hiking starts at about 2,600 euros. The Yoga, Yogic Detox and Tibetan Medicine are from about 4,300 euros for five nights. The fourteen night Ayurveda programme is from about 13,600 euros, and the twenty-one night Panchakarma is from about 20,300 euros.

Where this trend is going
The addition of emotional wellness programs at health clinics like Palace Merano and SHA is significant because it changes who these clinics serve, and for what objectives. A guest who would never have considered a week of physical detox might be drawn by a stress-recovery program that includes flotation therapy and breathwork. A returning detox client might choose Relax & Balance for their second or third visit.
The medical spas are also learning from the experience-driven retreats. Palace Merano choosing to invest in music therapy and flotation, rather than more IV drips, signals where the market is heading.
If stress, sleep disruption, or burnout is what you are actually dealing with, a traditional detox may not be the best starting point. The new generation of stress relief and emotional wellness programs is designed exactly for this.
