A twenty-one night sabbatical, and the only programme Kamalaya offers at a single length.
It is designed for people stepping out of their working life for a proper interval rather than a holiday: long enough for habits to change rather than merely pause, and priced well below the other three-week programmes because it is broader and less treatment-intensive.

Kamalaya, in detail

01
The property
Kamalaya is a wellness sanctuary set in 22 acres of tropical hillside falling to a secluded beach on the quiet southern coast of Koh Samui, built around a cave that Buddhist monks used for meditation and retreat for centuries. John Stewart found the site in 2000 and knew immediately it was the right place; the sanctuary opened in November 2005.
It was conceived and founded by John and Karina Stewart, who no longer run the property. Karina is a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the third generation of her family to practise it, and that lineage is the reason Kamalaya’s TCM expertise runs unusually deep. It has been maintained ever since, and remains one of the clearest reasons to choose Kamalaya over its peers: for guests specifically seeking Traditional Chinese Medicine rather than general wellness, this is one of the strongest addresses in Asia.
More on the property
The approach is deliberately plural. Ayurvedic, Chinese, Thai and Western medicine sit alongside naturopathy, functional medicine, physiotherapy and bodywork, held together by the Hippocratic principle that food should be the first medicine. There are more than ninety treatments and services on the menu and nineteen structured programmes.
The newest addition is the Cognitive House, a dedicated space for cognitive and neurological wellbeing offering neurofeedback, brain stimulation therapy and cognitive enhancement meditation with breathwork. It is the clearest signal of where the sanctuary is heading: brain health treated as seriously as gut health.
Kamalaya is built into a hillside running down to the sea, which gives it an unusually unforced sense of seclusion. It is best suited to adults, asks guests to keep to a digital-detox policy in communal areas, and attracts a genuinely international mix.

02
Health at Kamalaya
Kamalaya defines health and wellness as a whole balance of body, mind and spirit, and staffs accordingly: Thai therapists, registered nurses, TCM doctors, Ayurvedic specialists, naturopaths, local healers, meditation and lifestyle coaches, nutritionists, energy healers, fitness instructors and spiritual life-enhancement mentors.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is the deepest of those strands, a direct inheritance from co-founder Karina Stewart, a third-generation TCM doctor. Dedicated TCM consultation rooms sit at the centre of the wellness area, and a Chinese Herbal Medicine consultation uses the traditional four methods of diagnosis: inquiry, observation, listening and palpation.
More on health at kamalaya
Programmes are assembled from these modalities rather than sold as fixed protocols, and each combines several: Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Thai Medicine, yoga philosophy, mindfulness practice and mentoring, functional medicine, naturopathy, physiotherapy and fitness.
Two dedicated houses hold the newer work. The Longevity House brings the regenerative therapies under one roof, including IV therapy, ozone therapy and hyperbaric oxygen. The recently launched Cognitive House focuses on mental clarity, emotional balance and brain performance, with neurofeedback, brain stimulation therapy and cognitive enhancement meditation with breathwork. Kamalaya also hosts visiting teachers, healers and practitioners for retreats and workshops through the year.

03
Kamalaya cuisine
Kamalaya’s cuisine was co-created by Karina Stewart and the resort chef, and is shaped by her Traditional Chinese Medicine background: food is treated as the first medicine rather than as an accompaniment to treatment.
Three healthy cuisine meals per night of stay are included in every wellness programme, along with all beverages except imported drinks and alcohol. Menus are adapted to the programme, and specialised cleansing diets are used on the detox retreats, designed to minimise toxic intake and reduce strain on the digestive system.
More on kamalaya cuisine
For guests staying on a room-only basis, meal plans are available separately at THB 1,100 for breakfast, 1,620 for lunch and 2,030 for dinner per person per night.

The seaside resort
Seventy-six rooms and villas across eighteen categories, spread over 22 acres of hillside falling to a secluded beach: 24 Hillside Rooms at 35 sqm, 12 Suites from 56 to 112 sqm, 13 Superior Suites at 65 sqm, 20 Villas at 75 sqm, 5 Pool Villas from 126 to 306 sqm and 2 Penthouse Suites from 142 to 207 sqm.
Rooms have tea-making facilities, a healthy minibar and daily fresh fruit. There are deliberately no televisions, in keeping with the digital detox, though WiFi is complimentary.
More on the seaside resort
The wellness area includes dedicated Traditional Chinese Medicine consultation rooms, single and double treatment rooms, far infrared saunas, herbal steam caverns, and swimming and thermal plunge pools. The Shakti Fitness Centre anchors the movement side.
The Longevity House is the newest addition, housing IV therapy, ozone therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy together.
Dining runs across three venues: Soma, overlooking the Kamalaya valley and the coast, for breakfast and dinner; Amrita Café among the lotus ponds by the leisure pool for lunch; and the Alchemy Tea Lounge at reception for elixirs, juices, medicinal herbal teas and Afternoon High Tea.
Beyond the wellness areas there is the Kamala Boutique, an art gallery, a library and TV lounge, and the Yantra Hall overlooking the sea for retreats and events. The monks’ meditation cave remains at the heart of the property and is still used for meditation. Daily holistic activities and classes run throughout the week and are included with every stay.
Rooms & suites

Is Kamalaya good for Traditional Chinese Medicine?
It is one of the strongest addresses in Asia for it. Kamalaya was co-founded by Karina Stewart, a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the third generation of her family to practise it, and the property has maintained that depth of TCM expertise ever since. There are dedicated TCM consultation rooms, resident TCM doctors, and Chinese Herbal Medicine consultations using the traditional four methods of diagnosis. TCM also shapes the cuisine, which Karina co-created. If you are specifically seeking Traditional Chinese Medicine rather than general wellness, this is a genuine specialist rather than a resort offering it as one option among many.
Do I have to book a wellness programme?
If you are a first-time guest staying fewer than seven nights, yes: a minimum three-night wellness programme is required. Returning guests and those staying a week or more can book on a room-only basis. Every room, programme or not, includes a wellness consultation, a body bio-impedance analysis, the daily classes and full use of the facilities.
How do I get to Kamalaya?
Fly to Koh Samui, which Bangkok Airways serves directly from Bangkok, Phuket, Utapao, Chiang Mai, Krabi and Singapore. The resort is around 45 minutes by car from Samui airport, and a round-trip private transfer is included when you book a wellness programme.
What is the minimum stay?
Three nights for most of the year, rising to seven nights over the peak period from 23 December to 10 January. The shortest programmes, Relax & Renew, Personal Yoga Synergy and Introduction to Detox, all start at three nights.
Is Kamalaya suitable for children?
The facilities and services are designed for adults who seek the time, place and expertise to improve their wellbeing, so it is best suited to guests aged 16 and above.
What does the room rate include, and what does the wellness programme add?
They are two separate purchases. The room rate, for stays between 1 April 2026 and 31 March 2027, includes a full daily healthy buffet breakfast, access to the wellness facilities, the fitness centre, the steam rooms and the plunge pools, and the weekly schedule of group classes. The wellness programme is charged on top and adds your personalised treatments and consultations, full-board healthy meals for the duration of the programme, and return airport transfers. All rates are quoted in Thai Baht.
Does the wellness programme have to be as long as my stay?
No, and this is the thing most people assume wrongly. The programme length and the length of stay are independent, so you can stay ten nights and take a five-day programme, or arrive a few days early to settle before it starts. One exception: a first-time guest staying between three and six nights must book a wellness programme of at least three days.
What is the minimum stay at Kamalaya?
Three nights for most of the year. Over the festive period, from 20 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, the minimum rises to seven nights.
How do I choose the right programme?
Kamalaya offer a complimentary introductory consultation with one of their Wellness Guardians before you book. They are available in several languages and across time zones, and the call is there to understand your goals and recommend the programme that fits rather than to sell you the longest one. Ask us and we will arrange it, or book directly at kamalaya.com/wellness-guardian-consultation.
Is there a phone policy?
Yes. Guests are asked to observe a digital detox policy and to refrain from using electronic devices in the communal areas. Your room is your own.
