Two clients asked us the same question in the same week this summer, from opposite ends of it. One wanted a few nights in September and told us plainly that the clinic she had in mind cost more than she wanted to spend. The other wanted a full week in August with her partner, who had no intention of following a programme and simply wanted to eat well, swim and use the gym.
Between the two of them we priced eleven places for their real dates. Doing it twice in a week taught us more about the difference between a short stay and a full one than a year of reading brochures had, so here is the whole of it, with the prices.
What three or four nights can actually do
A short stay will not change your metabolism. No matter how good the clinic or the health resort, it is just too short for cellular-level change and to feel good. It is the single most useful thing to know before you book one.
There is only one exception in our portfolio: Elysium Institut, which is very specific, and does not feel particularly good while you're doing the treatments, but radically changes some parameters of your body, sometimes in just a few days (and for most guests, in a few weeks).
Seven days of detox and preventive health will move your weight and your bloods. Three days will not.
What a short stay does do, and does well:
- Measures you properly. A full diagnostic work up takes about a day and a half, and the results are the same whether you stay three nights or fourteen. If what you want is to know where you stand, a long weekend buys all of it.
- Interrupts a pattern. Four nights of proper sleep, no alcohol, no evening screens and somebody else deciding what you eat is enough to break a bad month. That is worth doing two or three times a year and it is how our repeat guests actually use these places.
- Lets you try a clinic or a resort before you commit a fortnight to it, at roughly a third of the cost. We have helped several clients avoid an expensive mistake this way.
What it does badly is weight, gut repair, and anything needing a refeeding phase. Those want a week at the very least, and two to three weeks in most cases.
Seven short programmes worth booking this summer
One guest, four nights, arriving Saturday 22 August. Room and programme together, from the same rates we quote from. Where a house does not sell exactly four nights, this is its nearest programme with the room priced for four, which is how we would frame it before going back to them for the exact figure.
| Retreat | Best for | Setting | Good to know | 4 nights, 1 guest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CamiralCaldes de Malavella, Costa Brava, SpainEurope | Decompressing without a clinic | Costa Brava, golf and forest | A wellbeing centre rather than a clinic, so no medical gatekeeping | €2,954≈ $3,410 |
| Clinique NescensGenolier, Canton of Vaud, SwitzerlandEurope | A full longevity work up in three days | Above Lake Geneva, thirty minutes from the airport | The suite and full board sit inside the programme price, so this figure is the whole cost of the stay | CHF 3,000≈ €3,203 / $3,698 |
| Villa EdenMerano, Sud Tyrol, ItalyEurope | A short reset with real comfort | Private park, Merano | Twenty five suites and a Michelin kitchen; the 3% service charge applies to the room only | €3,890≈ $4,491 |
| Palazzo FiuggiFiuggi, ItalyEurope | Tasting a serious programme | Thermal park, Lazio | The short version of a house built for two and three week stays | €4,150≈ $4,791 |
| ZEM Wellness ClinicAltea, Alicante, SpainEurope | Sea, sleep and structure | Above the bay at Altea | Opened 2025, so the rooms and the equipment are new | €4,700≈ $5,426 |
| Grand Resort Bad RagazBad Ragaz, St. Gallen, SwitzerlandEurope | Rest, and the partner who is not doing a programme | Thermal water of the Tamina gorge, Swiss Rhine valley | Recharge is deliberately not medical: no diagnostics, no consultations. At four nights that is honestly the better answer. August is their top season, so the same four nights come to about CHF 3,850 in a quieter month. | CHF 4,450≈ €4,751 / $5,485 |
| Lanserhof SyltList, Sylt (Schleswig-Holstein), GermanyEurope | Diagnostics at the top of the market | In the dunes on the North Sea | Longevity Check is built as four days, so this is a complete programme rather than a shortened week | €4,844≈ $5,592 |
Indicative, from our stored rates rather than a fresh quote. Tell us your dates and we will have the house confirm the exact figure.
What a week changes
The reason a week costs more than twice a long weekend is that the second half is where the work happens. A Mayr or fasting week spends its first two or three days emptying you out, which is the unpleasant part and the part a short stay stops at. The refeeding phase that follows is what teaches your gut to behave differently, and it is the bit people remember a year later.
The same is true of anything measured. A week gives a clinic time to test you, change something, and test again. Three nights gives it time to test you once and hand you a PDF.
Six European weeks, and their prices
Seven nights for one guest following the programme, arriving Saturday 22 August, room and programme together. One guest rather than two because that is how most people travel to these places: about eight in ten of the requests we receive are for somebody going alone. If you are travelling as a couple and both of you follow a programme, add roughly a second programme fee to every figure below, which is the single biggest thing that moves these totals.
| Retreat | Best for | Setting | Good to know | 7 nights, 1 guest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buff Medical ResortKonstanz, Baden-Württemberg, GermanyEurope | Genuine F. X. Mayr fasting | Private park on Lake Constance | The least expensive real week here, and the most demanding | €4,550≈ $5,253 |
| VIVAMAYR Maria WörthMaria Wörth, Carinthia, AustriaEurope | Mayr medicine from the house that modernised it | On the Wörthersee, Carinthia | PURE is the base programme every VIVAMAYR stay sits on, and up to two further modules can be added to it | €6,696≈ $7,731 |
| Villa EdenMerano, Sud Tyrol, ItalyEurope | A week that still feels like a holiday | Private park, Merano | The most indulgent on this list, and the best spa | €6,800≈ $7,851 |
| ZEM Wellness ClinicAltea, Alicante, SpainEurope | Structure, sea and new facilities | Above the bay at Altea | Their nutritionist can take the menu down to 600 to 800 calories if that is the goal | €8,900≈ $10,275 |
| Chenot Palace WeggisWeggis, Canton of Lucerne, SwitzerlandEurope | The most structured detox week in Europe | Above Lake Lucerne, Switzerland | Advanced Detox is their best selling programme. Taken in the Nest room it is not the dearest week on this page, which surprises most people | CHF 8,370≈ €8,937 / $10,317 |
| Palace MeranoMerano, Sud Tyrol, ItalyEurope | The most treatments per day | Historic house, Merano | The European reference for detox, and priced like it | €9,100≈ $10,506 |
Indicative, from our stored rates rather than a fresh quote. Tell us your dates and we will have the house confirm the exact figure.
Four things that make these prices impossible to compare at a glance
This is the part that took us two full shortlists to see clearly, and it is worth more than any individual number above.
- What is included in the programme price. At Clinique Nescens the suite and full board are already in the programme figure, so its number looks low beside houses that add the room on top. Read what the price contains before you read the price. Two totals that differ by two thousand euros are often the same stay described differently.
- The person who is not doing a programme. Almost every couple we quote has one of each, and the cost of the second person ranges from nothing to a great deal. When we priced one August week across six clinics, one gave the partner the room free and charged only his board at 139 euros a day, two had his full board already inside the room rate, and one charged 250 euros a day for it. Over seven nights that spread alone was worth more than a thousand euros.
- Treatment density is not the same as price. ORA at La Baule publishes a six day slimming and detox programme at 1,380 euros that contains roughly twenty hands on treatments plus four consultations. Buff prices a seven night Mayr fast at 1,400 euros that is medical supervision with almost no hands on treatment at all. Neither is worse value. They are different products, and the client who wants massages every afternoon should not book the second one.
- An upgrade subject to availability is not an upgrade. Of six clinics quoting us the same week in August, five offered one on availability and one confirmed it at the time of booking. Ask which you are being given, because only one of those is worth anything when you arrive in high season.
A note on August in Europe
Where a clinic is located matters more in August than at any other time of year, and it rarely appears in the decision. All the addresses we recommend are fine in the summer season: Buff has a private park on Lake Constance, VIVAMAYR is on the Wörthersee, Chenot sits above Lake Lucerne, Bad Ragaz has the thermal water of the Tamina gorge, ZEM takes the sea breeze above the bay at Altea, and Lanserhof Sylt has the North Sea and its dunes. If heat is a problem for you, choose the altitude or the water first and the programme second.
The three we would pick
One for a long weekend, one for the method most people mean when they say they want a Mayr week, and one for anybody who wants the most structured week in Europe and is willing to pay for it.
Clinique Nescens
Why it works for you
- The best three nights on this page, because it is the one short stay built to deliver a complete result rather than a sample of a longer one.
- A full longevity work up, read and explained by one of the doctors before you leave, which is exactly what a short stay is good at.
- Thirty minutes from Geneva airport, so three nights really is three nights rather than two and two travel days.
The week, in short
- Day one is measurement: bloods, body composition, cardiovascular and cognitive markers.
- Day two is the consultation that turns those numbers into a plan you can actually follow.
- Treatments and the spa run alongside, above Lake Geneva with the Jura behind you.
Good to know
- The suite and full board are inside the programme price, not added to it, which is why this figure looks lower than the others and is not.
- Priced in Swiss francs.
- It is a clinic first. Come for the medicine, not for a resort.
Chenot Palace Weggis
Why it works for you
- The most structured week on this page. Chenot is the protocol the others get measured against, and their own record calls Advanced Detox the best selling programme they run.
- If you would rather be told what to do each day than choose from a menu, this is the house that does it.
- Above Lake Lucerne, so the walking is good and August is comfortable.
The week, in short
- Bioenergetic screening on arrival sets the treatment plan, rather than a fixed package deciding it for you.
- The hydro-energetic triad most days: hydro-aromatherapy, phyto-mud and hydro-jet.
- The Chenot Diet, reduced calorie and plant based, which is the part guests underestimate.
Good to know
- Priced in Swiss francs, and in the Nest room it comes in below Palace Merano rather than above it.
- The detox is real. Most guests feel worse before they feel better, usually around the third day.
- Zurich is about an hour away by road.
VIVAMAYR Maria Wörth
Why it works for you
- When somebody says they want a Mayr week, this is usually the week they mean.
- PURE is the base every VIVAMAYR stay is built on: a full medical assessment first, then only the treatments your doctor thinks you need, which keeps the cost honest.
- On the Wörthersee, so the lake is there for the mornings and the walking is flat.
The week, in short
- A thorough medical assessment before anything else starts, which sets the level of the fast rather than a brochure deciding it.
- The treatments that define the method: yoga or Shiatsu, movement therapy, massage, electrolysis foot baths, herbal baths or mud wraps and a salt scrub.
- Up to two further modules can be added on top of the seven nights if the assessment calls for them.
Good to know
- Nothing is added for its own sake, which is the point, but it also means the final figure moves once you have been assessed.
- The chewing discipline is not a gimmick and it is the hardest habit to keep at home.
- Klagenfurt is twenty minutes away, Ljubljana and Salzburg are the usual alternatives.
How to choose between them
Start with how many nights you can genuinely give it, because that decides more than the destination does. If it is three or four, pick the house that measures you best and accept that it is a diagnostic and a pause rather than a transformation. If it is seven, pick the discipline you will actually keep for the whole week, and be honest with yourself about whether that is a fast.
Then tell us who is travelling with you and whether they are doing a programme, because as the numbers above show, that single question moves the total more than almost anything else on the page. Send us your dates and we will come back with two or three, the quotes for your dates, as well as the detailed inclusions of your progr.
